Best Type of Headphones?

While I was shoveling earlier, I started wishing my headphones were more like earmuffs. It got me to thinking..
Does anybody know what the best types of headphones are? By best I am referring to the highest sound quality, and the least damaging to your hearing (or are they all the same?).
Even if you don't know anything about headphones, which style do you prefer?

These have served me real well for years.
As a general rule id say any (well-reviewed, established brand) pair for ~$100 will do you well.
I guess the same goes for earbuds, but i cant ever get myself to spend big on then due to how fragile and small they are.

i prefer the shure in-ears.

Liquid has it right! Sennheiser makes some of the goddamn best headphones ever, the only brand i think of that can top sennies would be grado's. The best part, IMO, besides the sound quality is that every part in sennheiser headphones can be replaced individually. So if something breaks on them you wont have to buy a whole new set to repair them.
The sony MDR's are decent headphones but they suffer from a real nasty design flaw. The joint that allows the cups to fold up is made of plastic so any stress on it will cause the joint housing to crack and make the phones either really uncomfortable to wear, or impossible to wear. As a dj i went through at least 5 pairs of the MDR's before i tossed em for good and got my sennie cans.

I'm getting a pair of shures pretty soon. I've been starving for some good quality music from my mp3 for a while, and It's finally time to get some good headphones.
I've never been a big over-the-head headphones guy. I guess it's cause my hair is so poofy that they're uncomfortable, and whenever you move they fall off.

see, i have the opposite problem, i never met a pair of ear buds that fit properly. They either pop out constantly or are too damn uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

Thats true.
Basically though, (my uncle helped me figure this out), you gotta wear them for a bit, and it'll feel like they're raping your ear. But your ear will adjust and get used to them, and over time they will feel perfectly fine.
My uncle is an audiophile.
What are your favorite kind of behind-the-head headphones? I can wear those, and I actually like them more than ear buds, but I can't find any that are high quality. It seems the high quality ones are either over the head, or ear buds.

i had the same problem.. but, the shures are, imo, extremely comfortable.. and come w/ a ton of different ear pieces for different ear sizes and comfort levels... foam, soft rubber and harder rubber (not hard, just firmer than the other ones)..
the sound quality is really amazing, and unless i'm right next to the subway tracks when a train comes roaring in, I hear *no* outside noise.

Oh i've tried everything. From third party inserts, to the ones that come with the phones, my ear canals are just too tiny (i think anyways) to allow me to wear them comfortably. The best i was able to get was the soft foam rubber inserts that molded to your ears when you pressed them in, however if i start sweating they'd pop out or after a few weeks of being exposed to all the salt they'd start to deteriorate. Believe me i'd love to be able to use ear buds because they place the speaker in the best space possible, inside your ear. Also they're significantly lighter then any type of headphone out there which is a huge plus if you're wearing them for a long time.
Do you use these when you spin?

just a side question, does anyone know if mp3 players will play flac? Probably the dumbest question on earth...
Because since I'm getting nicer headphones, it only makes sense that I would get a more detail intensive format.

Again id go with the sennies, IMO not the best quality from them because they let in too much outside noise for my liking (although i think that's a legal requirement to allow people to be more conscious of their surroundings)

there's some with some reviews to look at

im sure there are, when looking at mp3 players there should be a section on acceptable file formats. I know mine wont play .flac or .ogg

up until they broke, i was just using sony headphones. Nothing special at all. Now I'm borrowing my girlfriends iluvs, until I can get my shures.
But skullcandy was pretty good when i tried them out. But nothing really beyond that. I haven't tried out any behind-the-heads. I don't really know why. I guess I'm prejudice against them cause, yes, they let in too much sound.
Edit: I can't find the box my mp3 came in, so I'll just try to add a flac file to it, and see what happens.

no, i don't wear them when i spin, though I've thought about it... I think mainly because i tend to forget i have headphones on and try to walk somewhere.. so, the coiled cord of dj headphones comes in handy.
I still use my original pare of stanton headphones to dj.. they've lost very little quality over time. I did ask for a pair of the dj1000s by pioneer for x-mas, so we'll see if i'll be changing.

yah, or if they do stick they're crammed in at some ungodly angle that leaves your ear aching for hours.
