techniques for uniform substrate and casing depth?
    #772512 - 07/24/02 06:42 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Are there any special techniques used to achieve a uniform bulk substrate depth in a larger than average container say 2'x2'? Also when applying the casing layer to a colonized container of substrate people find it hard to apply an even layer with just the use of eyes to judge if it's level. Does anyone know of a special technique or equipment that helps in applying an even casing layer?

There are several methods described in TMC and/or GGMM.
The easiest I can think of is to first determine the depth of the substrate and then the depth of the caseing. Cut a notch the distance from the top of you container to that depth out of a piece of 2x4 or other simmilar piece of wood. Drag this across the substrate/caseing, and you have a relatively level/flat surface.
