synthetic Filter Disc with Silicone

Has anyone had success with just the metal ring and a synthetic filter disc on a wide mouth jar? If so I ws planning on doing this and adding a dab of silicone on the filter disc as an injection site. Thank you for the help trippers.

i just recently did this and lost all of my grains because they dryed out to fast. you need the metal lid on there as well as a filter disk...

i put 4 holes in my disk. i usually use a small finish nail to do the trick. i put 4 of them in a sqaure right where the lid starts to raise up.

You can use just the disk, but you'll need to tape most of it up after sterilizing to prevent moisture loss. Search fahtsters posts. He did a writeup on those.

All you need is one 1/4 inch hole covered with micro-pore tape, no need for silicone or filter disks.

wouldnt there be a high risk of contamination during inoculation since u have a 1/4" open hole?

Four smaller holes around the perimeter would be better if you're going to use micropore tape for a filter. Tape the holes before sterilization, then wipe with alcohol and inject through the taped holes. When you remove the syringe, place another piece of tape over the now damaged one. Work in a glovebox.
