 First cell phone bought, advice?

I recently bought a 20$ cellphone, and chose the plan for 25 cents a minute. I figured that since att&t was turning off their service to all payphones in 2008, I was doing the sensible thing since I alreadh pay 75 cents for 3 minutes long distance (the only calls I make)
Since that time, I've discovered that my phone is not java enabled (no widgets) and besides the calculator/alarm feature, it doesn't do much for me on the "use only in emergencies" plan.
So... for the vast majority of you users who've had a cell for years, I have some questions.
Are cell-phone games worth buying? The ones I've played on other phones seem very limited by the fact that you can only press one button at a time. Tetris seems a likely option, so does sudoku (though I can't play it) and the Heroes official mobile game.
Is .01$ per kilobyte a rediculous price to pay for downloads?
The phone comes with some pretty shitty ringtones, should I bother dling some better ones, or do they intentionally give you beethovens 5th so that you HAVE to dl a real ring tone?
Should I just buckle in with a 2 year contract, at 40$ a month, with some phone that will cost me fifty bucks? I swear I don't really call that many people. But the people I do call tell me I'm much better off with a plan than a pay as you go phone.

pay as you go is more expensive (per minute), unless you are going to use the phone very little. figure it out yourself, it depends on your needs.

My phone had two activation options. One was 25 cents per minute. The other was 10 cents per minute, AND one dollaar for each day the phone was used. It worked out to be, if you use the phone less than 7 minutes a day, the 25 cents a minute "plan" was better. I hope to only use this phone for emmergencies/luxury needs. Does anyonne see an obivous reason this plan would fail?

Only thing I can really comment on is the games. I always have a few different games on my phone, and it's incredibly useful when you are really bored. If I'm waiting for the bus, riding the train, or just waiting for something with nothing to do, some tetris, bowling, or other games is a great way to pass the time. I'd say get at least one, if not a few.

My first phone was a pay as you go. I ended up using it way more than I thought so after a month I just upgraded to the cheapest plan I could find. Look around a lot of providers will probably be offering a lot of good deals on phones/plans since christmas is cominn up

if by luxury you mean use sparingly, then for that and emergency uses only, i think it's perfect for your needs.
as you already know, the more minutes you use the more expensive it gets, and the cheaper a phone with a contract will be comparatively.

Don't get games. their only use is to run out your battery so when you actually need your phone it has run out of juice.

ya, seriously. Those minutes stack up quick. I've known half a dozen people who get ringed into this stupid plan and they all say the same thing. "my phone calls are always short" or "its only for emergencies"
But thats never how it ends up. They end up using it as their exclusive phone. I'm not saying you can't do it, but police yourself.
Also some quick reminders:
They round every minute up. So even if you go one second over a minute, they will charge for two minutes.
Beware who you give your number to. Often as soon as you give the number, they will enter it into their phone as your exclusive number. So when they want to call you, they will use that number
And i don't suggest wasting any money on ringtones or games. Those are like lottery tickets, just a tax on stupid people.
