rye berries... question
    #769834 - 07/23/02 07:29 AM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I am attempting to start growing using rye berries and in the FAQ it says if you dont have a pressure cooker, you can boil the jars for 30 mins. three days in a row. Has anyone done this and do you have any advice for me? Is It just as successful? Damn I really need a pressure cooker.

You must pressure cook rye berries, atleast thats what I've gathered. Try boiling brown rice flour and verm.

Nevermind everyone. I found it by searching for fractional sterialization. I just didnt know what it was called until re-reading the FAQ. Sorry if I bothered anyone. Anyone who has the same question look here.

Fractional sterilization is 3 or 4 times the work, takes longer & iffy. With rye or any seed, a PC is almost a must have.......... unless you want to learn all about contams from the git/go. SixTango

grain is enough of a bitch as it is, even with a PC. if you don't have a PC, use BRF and verm... fractional sterilization sounds like it MIGHT work, but yeah, it's gonna cause you stress man, and you don't want that. a pressure cooker is an important investment if you're serious at all in this hobby. go to walmart, shell out 50 bucks, and you'll have nice, contam-free, bulk whole grain mushrooms food.

Maybe try increasing the boil time to an hour x 4?

I believe the theory is that stuff in cysts germinates after an exposure to heat. the subsiquent boilings kill anyone that germinates. Multiple boils get the cysts to pop and then kills them. More and longer boils should increase effectiveness.

FYI, I just got a 22 qt presto PC for $85.86. $7.36 for shipping. Seems a great price and it arrived in 3 days.

>fractional sterilization sounds like it MIGHT work

It actually DOES work, I tried it myself.
But it?s way too much work, if you ask me....
You can get a 5 Quart(small, I know, but for many people good enough) PC fort as little as 10$ at ebay....

I'd be careful, though, going with the cheapest pressure cooker - more chance, imo, of the safety valve clogging up and the whole damn thing exploding. This might well sterilize the medium, but it's a little hard on the kitchen...

A few extra bucks for good quality is money well spent here

I think yoiu'll find it hard to buy a pressure cooker (in North America) that's not UL listed. Ipso facto, you have a minimum level of safety and testing.

I'd be more worried about buying a second hand unit than I would a cheap new one...a lot of people don't know how to check them properly for safety and second hand units are often missing safety manuals.
