Activated charcoal in LC

I swear I read somewhere that someone added some activated charcoal to their dextrose/malt mix. I can't find anything about it. My guess is its to give the mycelium/spores something to grab on to. Anyone have any information about this method? Thanks

i read this in the mushroom cultivator. activated charcoal mimics the primordia stimulating properties of pseudomonas putida and other lesser known beneficial organisms. as for the use in lc, i found a tek by monster mitch here: shroomery

IIRC there was a thread on usincg activated charcoal in agar- seems it attracts the toxins that may be present- and the black agar is really cool looking with the white mycelia on it.

That should be the thread on the charcoal agar- under 'black agar'.

I just made a bunch of cane sugar LC's with a little activated charcoal, even with only 4 capsules of medical grade activated charcoal in a gallon the liquid was black. They were innoculted a few days ago with multispore. Will post pictures if there is some good growth.

I just asked for it at the walmart pharmacy, it was behind the counter. I think it was a little pricey, like 25$ for a bottle. Planned on using it for OD's so its not a bad investment. Keep it right next to the epi-pens.

Yeah, you can get it from petstores etc. I payed so much because it is in gelcaps. Thats a solid price. This is an experiment, I wouldn't go out and buy supplies just yet, we got a week or so until I can judge the mycelium's performance.

Its been 2 weeks and no growth, the activated charcoal fell out and settled on the bottom. Maybe due to its porus nature the charcoal absorbed the spores and didn't let them germinate? Will try this again with a LC. peace.

Tried again with LC to LC transfer. Another fail, this has been busted.

Small strands, slowed growth to a near halt. Nowhere near as good as traditional LC.

I tried with Reishi, Ps cubensis, and Ps Azurscens with no positive results.

What role does Activated Charcoal play in mycology? Increase mycelial health, absorption of toxins or nasties, helps to see the mycelium better.
