incubator...fire hazard?
    #7656355 - 11/19/07 07:06 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

i am using the double tub incubator with a submersible fishtank heater, if the rubber pieces holding it to the bottom were to come loose causing the heater to float and touch the top bin that you put the jars in, would it be hot enough to melt the plastic or maybe start a fire?

prob would just melt a hole in the top bin, causing water to flood the top bin...shouldnt be a fire hazard though, worst that would prob happen is your jars get flooded, you have a hole in a bin, and your heater shorts out from not being fully submerged under water.

the heater will most likely shut off when the surrounding water reaches its target temperature, which you set it to.

be careful the water level doesn't get too low or the heater will try and heat the air and get very hot and melt something. this happened to mine but the heater blew. it did a bit of damage to the bin before it died.

There is a potential. You have a electrical device that is designed to heat, and is plugged into 120vac and is being used in a manner for which it was not designed. I can see how murphy's law would come into play here. On the contrary, never heard any horror stories from using a tub in tub. Except for that alient mutant form of shit that I found growing in the bottom of my tub in tub (Yes, I had added H2O2 to the water). I no longer use one. I just wait out the few extra days and my patience is rewarded with a signifigantly less contamination rate.

what did the 'allent mutant form' look like....was it in the top tub or botttom, did u wipe down the inside before using it, or change the water after each incubation period?

Exactly why i dont use an incubator, an un nessasary expense, simply keeping my jars in a cupboard with the water heat works perfectly well.

99.9% of aquarium water heaters now have a thermal shutoff safety fuse that kills the heater if the element gets hotter than a preset temperature - this is pretty much a liability requirement so that the manufacturer isn't sued when some redneck lets his fishtank water evaporate below the heater level and the heater bursts into flame and burns his house down.

Usually, the worst that can happen would be that you would melt some of the top bin and have to buy a new heater. Safety devices aren't always 100%, though. It can still POTENTIALLY cause a fire, even though the chances of it doing so are very low.
