WBS turning black - mold or overhydration?
    #7620034 - 11/10/07 07:08 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

In order, the photos are:

The front of my WBS spawn bag.
The back of my WBS spawn bag.
A closeup of the uncolonized patch.

There is a large portion of my spawn bag on the back side that is turning black and refuses to colonize. I originally suspected a contam, but given the amount of moisture in there [a new thing, although I did add a full 12cc's of LC to inoculate] I think they may just be rotting now. A couple of days ago I mixed the spawn bag thoroughly such that there was little mycelium visible [and uniformly spread], in two days it entirely recolonized the outside except for the same size and position of the uncolonized black seeds.

This leads me to suspect it's not a proper contamination as the effected seeds aren't spreading their contam. If it's a case of rotten, over-hydrated mixture I will probably spawn it into coco coir and try to fruit. If you can spot a contam I will put it aside, watch the progress and knock up another bag with better-drained seeds and better-sterilized inoc procedures.

That's quite obviously a contamination. I don't know what exactly I'm supposed to spot, but there's clearly competing growth that makes this bag a junker.

12cc's, way too much. You're adding more liquid to already near capacity grains. Also looks like bacteria, and that bag is going to stink terribly.

Here's a pdf since it won't let me upload .jpg

I think it's a pretty obvious growth barrier, but I wasn't sure it was contamination since there's no visible growth -- just seeds turning black, which may have been a perfectly natural occurrence in poorly-managed bags.

RR, do you have anything to add? I think it's a contam, just not a particularly effective one.

Here is an interesting development... I opened the top of the bag and chucked it on an open windowsill about 5 days ago, and the mycelium has turned rhizomorphic and covered up the possible contam. Here are photos:

What does this mean? Will it pin and grow on the side of the bag? I don't want to cover it up since the top is so uneven and not rhizomorphic at all, so I'd rather growths on the side than none on the top, if only to see the effects of the 'contamination'. I'm still undecided as to what on earth is going on.
