Heroin drug targets middle school students
DALLAS – I interviewed a 10th grader the other day, and I can’t get her story out of my head.
Fifteen-year-old girls usually don’t have much to say that adults would consider "newsworthy." I should know – my oldest daughter is 15, and while I care deeply about the mundane dramas in her life, I doubt reporters would line up to relay those dramas to the world.
But Mariela Torres’ story shook me. She’s a cute, bright girl. Everybody seems to like her.
It was one of Mariela’s friends who first offered her "cheese" when she was just 13 years old. Mariela had never used any drugs before that day. "Cheese," she was told, wasn’t really a drug – it would just make her feel happy.
Here’s what Mariela didn’t know.
Cheese is the slang name for a mixture of black tar heroin and Tylenol PM. The substances are combined and come out looking much like parmesan cheese. The resulting product is sold for as little as $2 per hit.
Kids in the Dallas-area are buying "cheese" with their lunch money, according to media reports. They’re snorting the stuff up their noses – often at school – and dying in alarming numbers, according to the Dallas County medical office.
A recent study by the Dallas Independent School district determined that more than 5,000 kids have tried cheese. More than two dozen have died of overdoses. Most, like Mariela, first take the drug in middle school.
That’s shocking. Middle school students are being targeted by drug dealers and turned into heroin addicts before they reach high school.
Getting treatment The lucky ones, like Mariela, find treatment. After more than a year of use, she was put through detox, then more than three months of rehab.
I visited the rehab center Mariela attended. It was filled with kids. The average age is 15, but there were heroin addicts there as young as 12. It’s heartbreaking and infuriating.
Today, Mariela is drug free, but she knows people who are still using.
"It makes me want to go do it again," she told me. "But I know I shouldn’t, because I don’t want to go back through the same things I was going through."
Mariela is a good kid. I could tell that immediately. She smiles freely and looks you in the eye when she speaks. She has her whole life ahead of her. She’s even thinking of trying out for her high school soccer team.
I pray she makes it through her recovery and get the chance to play.

This reporter like so many others is a simple minded fool; I'm sure there are drug dealers walking around middle schools, that has to be the problem. There is no way that all those students have parents who are to busy for them or addicted to something like alcohol, or they general feel there life is worth less then others (people making fun of them because they don't wear the cool expensive stuff like all the other mindless sheep!).
When in this country will people stop blaming others for there problems; if your child uses tar heroin, its half your fault. everyone ego is so big that they look down on everyone, even themselves; They feel like there life sucks and need an "escape"; people who supply drugs don't "sell" or "push" it on anyone, they simple supply a product that people are after and that they can make a living of supplying.

When I first heard about this, I was sure it was an urban legend.
How the fuck does black tar heroin and tylenol look like "parmesean cheese"
Black tar heroin and tylenol would look like black tar heroin with powdered sugar.
Kids will do anything to get high, christ.

honistly this is just sad. only thing that was peddeled in my middle school was nickel bags, and occationaly a few pills, which kids rarely sold. i didnt try smokin weed till the 9th grade, nor did most kids i knew. at that age dare classes were still fresh in my mind and honistly drugs scared me. i honistly couldnt say why i tried pot, but i did. to this day i can say i have never shot anything into me or snorted anything, and i cant figure out why people would, especialy middle school kids. im not trying too put anyone down who does those thing, cause its all personal choice, and its YOUR choice. but why such a young age...

once again i should remind the drug-war warriors... it was easier to get xanax an marijuana at my school in middle school and early highschool than it was to get alcohol or ciggerettes.
Untill I graduated it was still easier to get pot or pills than alcohol.
Prohibition only removes regulation from the prohibited substance. Good job parents, you're keeping your kids safe.

Ooops... what about that "gateway drug" theory? The author obviously forgot to mention that she smoked marijuana a few times first to prepare her to try a harder drug like heroin.

Was it a children's hospital / children's rehab center by chance?

Its not just Texas that has this problem. in Michigan i know a girl that got in trouble for selling heroin in 8th grade.
I hate to sound evil or w.e But, this is good news. I hate to say it but, Kids dieing is kinda good. it helps parents realize that the war on drugs fucking blows.
I would hate if my child died from a drug overdose. But, when you make it so easy for them to get the drug I.E. not regulating it like alcohol and cigs.
Everyone knows drug dealers don't see age. They see profit. They scare these kids by sending them to rehab and yelling at them and it just makes the kids more depressed.
Stop feeding kids BS about how drugs are so bad. Give them the information about the good things and bad things. Don't lie to them like the government did with marijuana. Yes, its bad, but, its good at the same time. Cigs and Alcohol are good and bad and some people chose to use it and some people don't. GOD gave us free will for a reason. The government is trying to play god by taking away are free will.

Ha! You yourself are blaming one person's problem on someone else. The kids fucking take the drugs. First off, the chick is 15, she shouldn't still be in middle school. Secondly, when I was fucking 15 if I took cheese, or anything else (pot) then it was because I wanted to get fucked up, not because people fucking made fun of me or because of bad parenting.

> not because people fucking made fun of me or because of bad parenting.
Peer pressure isn't about "people making fun of you", but instead the need to fit in with your friends by doing what your friends are doing.
And bad parenting is certainly a very large aspect of todays "problem" of drug use with children. Parents are too busy working so that they can have the extra car, the extra tv, the extra things they think they have to have in order to be good parents all the while ignoring their children letting the TV and Internet babysit for them.
