Heres my dilemma, Tub-O-Straw (UPDATE)

I heated about 20lbs of straw at 170 for 90min. I put it in a big rubbermaid container and layered ONLY 3 PINTS of crumbled brf colonized cakes into it. I layed plastic full of holes on top of the straw/spawn and tucked it into the sides. It's 6in depth X 1ft X 2ft. At room temp. 73F.
Its been about 3 weeks and its probably only 50% colonized due to the small amount of spawn. Just a a bunch of penny sized spots of myc. showing on top of the straw. But no sign of contams.
I'm afraid at this rate its just a matter of time before the contams hit. Can I go ahead and case it to help from straw contams? Or should I just hope for the best? Any other ideas I could do with it. Thanks in advance. Greatly appreciated. First Bulk Grow.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
Ok so my tub finally got about 80% colonized, and I decided to case because I saw a spot of yellow piss on the top of my colonization. So my casing is colonizing well, but a little light got to it. So it is starting to pin in certain spots. Like 1" pins.
Can I go ahead and through a clear top on and start misting? Just let them grow that way. Or do I need to pick these pins off and make sure no light get to it?
Any suggestions?

Casing at this point would protect any contaminant spores that have landed on the straw and help them germinate. You should have used more spawn. Live and learn. RR

I have good luck sticking to a 1:5 ratio with wbs and straw. 20 lbs is a lot of straw for 3 pints.
Maybe start an outdoor sraw bed with it?

If I was to Lysol the shit out of my bathroom, pull the plastic back from the top, put gloves on, and flip & stir it around and then compress it down and recover. Would that help it to colonize any quicker or just introduce or spread contams.
LOL, reading it now, it sounds pretty damn risky.
Rabbit, you think there's any chance it will colonize fully if I just leave it alone. It looks to be getting pretty moist under there. Which probably isn't a good thing. But I did happen to put a layer of verm. under the straw to soak water and the 70-73 temps. should hold back contams alittle huh? Don't contams thrive the warmer it is.

why don't you just try removing the uncolonized area? seems a lot better than completely opening your substrate to contaminants. Unless its scattered in a bunch of really small pieces that is. rofl

definately dont pull the pins.... if they are coming, you might as well let them mature and hope for the best on successive flushes.
You might want to try and follow bryanbzl's advice and remove anything uncolonized.
It sounds like you have some slow colonization and if it is stalled at 80% Id bet your moisture content is too high.
read up on getting your moisture content right as this IMO is the biggest issue with bulk substrates...

Theres just small faint spots of colonization with pins popping up. If I was to remove the UNcolonized part, the whole surface would pretty much be gone. Also, there is pins popping up where the casing is NOT colonized (like growing from the substrate & threw the casing).
So the answer is= Put it in fruiting conditions and hope for the best????????????????Anything else I should know?

Think about how humid it is right below that casing layer. Thats why they want to grow from there. You'll more than likely be seeing more pins as time goes on. Just let it go. Like roger said, live and learn. It's how we all did it.

OK, So my casing layer isnt colonizing at all now and I had the worst pin set ever. But I do have shrooms and they are HUGE. Theres two monster shrooms that are atleast a foot tall with 2in thick stalks. Pretty impressive when your use to growing them rinkee-dinkee brf cake shrooms. Anyway there GT's on straw, I'll have pix posted in the next couple days.
Any suggestions how to get a better pinset on next flush? Like I said my casing isnt colonized at all. There just popping threw the casing.

Dunk your casing in h2o2 over night, make sure the water level does not rise up to the casing layer itself. Sit it in the fridge overnight, in the morning, drain out the water and watch em grow.
Search shroomery's forums for the dunk tek

drill some holes into the bottom of the tub and plug it with something that can be removed later on to drain the water out.
