Substrate depth
    #760122 - 07/19/02 07:44 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Hi,

When preparing substrate for a casing what is a good thickness of substrate, what is thick, what is thin, and how thick a layer will be produced by a colonized quart jar (including the dimensions in inches, for example a colonized quart jar will produce a layer of substrate x" thick covering an area y" by z"). Thank you for your help in these estimations.

Sincerely,

reite

I guess you do have much to learn newbie...

Few people case just their spawn substrate, they use it to spawn compost.

A quart jar holds a little over a half quart of colonized (let's say rye berries) if done correctly. That can be used to spawn 3-5 pounds of compost or dung/straw mixture which should then be put in a container that will give it it's optimal depth of 6". You can make it any depth by any dimension you like and grow shrooms, but optimally 6" gives the longest life of the cake (most flushes).

It's also a good idea to put a half inch of moist vermiculite under the compost.

It's also a good idea to case your compost cake on top with verm or coco coir (usually after the first flush)

I'm tired of typing now, go read the FAQ's.

"I guess you do have much to learn newbie..."

Always, everyday, and why I asked.

"Few people case just their spawn substrate, they use it to spawn compost."

I specifically asked about optimal depth of substrate because that is what I wanted to know. And I specifically did not want to ask about spawn.

"I'm tired of typing now, go read the FAQ's."

I have, multiple times, I did not see (or missed the optimal depth for substrate).

Thank you very much for your time, help and effort I sincerely appreciate it.

Sorry I misunderstood what you were asking, you only mentioned how a quart jar would fill what depth etc.

The 6" optimal theory isn't in the FAQ's, it comes from The Mushroom Cultivator by Stamets and Chilton.

Let me say first off that I haven't read "The Mushroom
Cultivator" so I can't dispute the optimum 6" but I have
cultivated for awhile and have had my successes and
can give you some tips that I think could help you.
1) poke drain holes in your trays to keep water from standing
in the tray.
2) cover the bottom with foil to keep light out (I've seen shrooms
grow straight down through an inch of verm to grow out of a
hole the size of a pencil lead. If you don't see them and pick em
they'll rot and kill your casing)
3) no matter how deep your substrate is, it should be four times
as deep as you (top)casing layer. (so if the substrate is 2" then
the casing layer should be 1/2", if it's 4" the casing is 1" ect.)
The trays your working with will determine the right formula
for you. Experiment and learn. And make notes of what you
tried. If you get high it's real easy to forget exactly what's in
which tray, and what worked best.
Good luck!

And it?s only valid for bulk substrate growing with compost.
