Compost is probably fine. They naturally seem to like piles of rotting grass clippings and leaves.

and the guy that got me the prints says pine needles and straw
and like you said leaves.. it will have to wait until I tackle oysters
thats next on my list ..but i will play with it on agar in the meantime
since it was a wild print .. got my blower for my flowhood BTW
so it will be easier to play with these edible prints

As workman said, grass clippings, leaves, and white pine needles worked best for me, but you gotta keep feeding 'em because they go through that mixture pretty fast.

I tried wood chips for Blewitts, and they didn't seem to like it. They only fruited where I put the grass clippings. Some time in the future I plan on trying grass clippings mixed with the chip now that I have my own chipper.

BTW, orchidfanatic, if you have those annoying, invasive "Tree Of Heaven" where you live, they work great for Oysters!

Could it be that they are high nitrogen lovers? Rotting grass has a lot of nitrogen. You could try adding blood meal which is an organic source of nitrogen to your sawdust, see how it goes.

Yep, a Chinese alien invasion!
These are some good pics of it: http://www.aznps.org/html/tree_of_heaven/tree_heav.htm
They actually get real big, and tree-like here. I have seen 8" diameter trunks, and Oysters grow on 'em like crazy. However, the wood is very light, brittle, and decomposes quickly.
