Me and my friend went to his house after the colts/pats game yesterday.SURPRISE, My friends home was broken into ,whatever dick head did it stole 4 of 8 guns,360,all the games,like 60 of them,and all his hddvd's,like 30 of them.Substantial loss,Probably some crack head.Anyways,he calls the cops they get there and write the report down on they're handy dandy notepads.Well the one cop says to my friend,"you know if i was you i would do what i had to do"meaning take matters into your own hands.I say, well why in the hell did we call you?He says"well I'm an officer of the law,and i have rules i have to follow.You on the other hand could do something about it".WTF??? Why cant they go out and do what they have to do?isn't that they're fucking job?So I come to the conclusion that they want my friend to go out and find this person/persons and fuck them up,so he can get arrested and probably get convicted of some fucked up felony.What a bunch of assholes,why do we have police if they're going to give us advice like that,and handle the situation as they did?I know that all police are not like this,but this incident just made my respect level for them go way down.Not that i had much anyway.

yeah, on one hand the cop sounds cool for stating the obvious, but its not like he'd refuse to serve the warrant when justice is done vigilante style. That's why I could never be a cop... too many ridiculous laws and you're the prosecutors/ legislators bitch

well they can protect you in a limited sense by preventing imoral acts they have reason to know will happen, as well as to prevent future crime by removing immoral people from society for a period (hopefully making them change their actions in the future).
Police aren't a bad idea. Its the actual law and people who become police and supervise them that are the problem.

There's not really much they can do. All that police are supposed to do is file a report and then it's filed away. Too many resources would be spent finding people's stuff that it would be pointless if they ever did actually find it or the burglar. The best way to protect yourself from theft is the obvious (lock everything up, set the alarm if you have one, etc...)
The best thing you can do won't protect against theft, but if will help catch them if they try to sell your shit.
WRITE THE SERIAL NUMBERS DOWN! Many times you'll get some of your shit back and you'll have a better chance of catching the s.o.b. that stole it.

well yeah thats what they do...
but if we ended the drug war, imagine how many cops we'd have to investigate assaults, property crimes et cet.
They could take fingerprints, et cet.
OP did they take fingerprints?
Some crackhead surely got arrested before, if they weren't too busy busting tweakers they could combat real crime by sending a print guy to see what they can find

We wouldn't have many cops if they weren't looking for drugs. And if we did, they damn sure wouldn't be chasing leads on stolen video games. lol
