Long string of B's in the top of some webpages
    #7527927 - 10/17/07 02:05 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Yeah, you heard me right. I've never seen this before, ever. On some webpages, like Google, I get this long string of B's which is followed by some unrecognizeable character. I've tried in both Firefox and IE and it's the same shit. I reinstalled Firefox, still have the same problem. Just started randomly last night.

Here's a screenshot:

Any idea what the fuck could be causing this? I'm baffled. When I view the source for the page, the B's are still there right before a < script> thing (don't know proper term, command?).

My only thought is that maybe java needs reinstalling?

Looks like a vista bug to me... probably a toolbar or spyware/malware that is incompatible with vista. It appears to be part of the browser and not part of the rendered page.

Well I'm running XP Pro, so that's not it. I also have Symantec Corporate which picks up spy/malware. And it occurs in both IE and Firefox. It's gotta be some software causing the problem, I just don't know which software.

Think the Java thing is a possibility?

Hahahahaha... I found out the cause. You techie people aren't gonna believe this one.

It seriously looked like I had a virus or something, so I ran a full system scan with Symantec with an updated def file. Found nothing. So I think that maybe my virus protection isn't catching something and decide to uninstall Symantec and replace it with virus protection provided by my University (Trend Micro product).

I uninstall Symantec, reboot, load up my browser... and low and behold the problem is gone. So it turns out that that problem was actually CAUSED by my virus protection. Guess this is why I always hear Symantec sucks.

wow, doesn't symantec also sometimes fuck up your settings when you try to uninstall it? I'm not too sure, this may be worthless slander

Well huh. Problem came back out of no where. And this time it slowed down my internet (T3) to 200kbps. I know some weird shit can happen when cables get kinked(mine runs under a desk and could get smushed by a rocking chair), so I tried a different cable. Same shit. Ran a speed test on my roommate's computer and he was pulling 6mbps down and 4kbps up... so I switched the jacks. Same shit again.

I was frustrated as hell trying to figure it out so I uninstalled the following:
-Adobe Flash
-Acrobat Reader
-Adobe Shockwave
-A few other things that could possibly cause problems because they are related to the internet.

I also repaired Microsoft .NET 2.0. I restarted and the problem seems to be gone. No more B's, just ran a speed test and I'm back up to 6mbps download and 4mbps upload.

My knowledge of networking isn't too amazing. Anyone here familiar with wtf the .NET framework does and how it could have messed up my connection?

Fucking hell. Everytime I think I find the cause, it resurfaces.

Perhaps my computer is connected to something on the net that might be doing this?

If I post the results of netstat -a, can someone decipher it?
