Record player for newbie

I would like to get into collecting records, but I have no idea what to look for in a player. All I know is that I would want it to have a headphone jack so I can plug in my surround sound into it and I need it to be relatively cheap.
Any ideas?

if you plan on just listening to records, get a belt drive. but if you plan on trying to mix or scratch, get a direct drive.

Go to your local record store, ask them for and I quote 'a cheap used record player' The only thing you need to be fuckin around with is the head, and they do indeed make a difference. A good needle and cartridge combo can cost a few hundred to even a grand for an amazing one. I managed to find one that would have cost a few hundred new for about 30 bucks at my local record store.

Way, way way out of my price range. I'm not ready to drop $1800 on a hobby yet.

Stanton T50 is a great place to start, it's the cheapest model in the Stanton roster. Very nice looking.

Check out the portable ones with a single internal speaker. If you buy it used, get a new needle.

You could hit up a few pawn shops or used electronic or record stores. If you dontt know what to look for in a brand try and get a deck with a decent weight to it and an arm that seems sturdy too. You shouldn't have to spend more than $5o. I've been collecting a few albums here and there for a few years and recently, finally, picked up a deck - a Stanton Str8-50 with a cartridge for $50 at a pawn shop nearby, works great.
I've been havin a blast jammin to records day and night and picking up albums on vinyl that i don't already have on cd, it's a lot of fun when you can get stuff you like for $3.00 on average. Works out real well for me since I listen to mostly older stuff anyway. And it's hard not to resist picking up some of my favorite records I already have on cd when they're only $.99! Hopefully you already have a receiver and good speakers;)

Check out this portable tt from Numark. It is the only tt I know of with a headphone jack. It goes for $70.

I have a Sony turntable with a Stanton cartridge run through a Carver receiver. Turntables are generally just a platter spinning thing with an arm to mount the cartridge. They don't have any amplifier type circuitry to allow you to run headphones straight. If they do they are something else. Usually quite shitty.
