Name all the stuff you can think of that Cubies grow on
    #7500675 - 10/09/07 07:14 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Name all the stuff you can think of that Cubies grow on! Let's make a list of substrate materials we know to have worked, which can be used to aid people in devising their own formulation.

Please be as complete as you can, adding important aspects of the materials if you feel they need mention.

Rye, Rye berries, Millet, Wild Bird Seed, Brown Rice and their flours - mycelium & fruiting

Straw (hydrated or composted) - mycelium & fruiting

Cow dung, sheep shit & rabbit droppings - mycelium & fruiting - substrate components

Horse poo (fermented, dried & hydrated) - mycelium & fruiting - substrate or component

Worm castings - mycelium & fruiting - substrate or component - hard to hydrate without losing texture

Coco Coir - mycelium & fruiting - substrate component - Cubies fruit on it but not psychoactive. nitrogen/nutrient deficient, good structure-imparting component of substrates

Spent Coffee Grounds - mycelium & fruiting - substrate component nitrogen-rich nutrient additive

Hardwood chips - mycelium & fruiting - substrate component, Cubies fruit poorly on it alone, good structure-imparting component of substrates, reasonably contam resistant

(news)paper - mycelium & fruiting

Cardboard - mycelium & fruiting - quite contam resistant

Poo/Straw/Lime compost - mycelium & fruiting, near ideal fruiting substrate, quite contam resistant, use any poo suitable for growing.

My first grows were on straight coir, no nitrogen additives, and my shrooms definately knocked my socks off. To each their own though.

I recall that low potency on pure coir was the consensus many moons ago.

Well that settles that one :smile2:

Don't get me started on all the B substrates.

B because they all start with the letter B.  They're fun, but for novelty, not production.

I reject that consensus, based on personal experience. :crankey:

(Can you believe it has taken me this long to make a post...?)

This discussion just reminded me of a good question. A couple years ago I came upon what appeared to be some sort of Bolete, although at the time my mycology knowledge was nearly non-existent so any real identification was impossible. But the interesting part was it appeared to me in every way to be growing directly on and from a deceased bird, a crow. (Bird keeping with the B subtrates here...)

I guess I am wondering if it is at all possible to actually fruit something off carrion? Beyond Cordyceps and such I have never really heard talk of that. Is it doable in any way?

how do you grow on bibles? just tear some pages out and throw 'em in the substrate? i've got a ton of those things, and i'll never use them otherwise
