Thanks, I recently acquired a slave unit and have since been obsessed with back lit gill shots.
Upon first taking up the hobby of hunting mushrooms I was always extremely weary of pluteus, questioning my ability to distinguish them from Entoloma. Looking back on that now it seems a little silly as it's an easy call. In all those moments of uncertainty I nibble, smelled, questioned, and observed the mushrooms, pristine or past their prime it didn't matter. In learning how to distinguish between the two genera I also developed a mild and totally illogical aversion to Pluteus... so nope, never eaten them. The Pluteus petasatus looked nice and it did go in the basket, however rather than being cooked it is destined to be cut up and looked at under the microscope, which is by far my favorite use for the genus.
I do know several people who eat Pluteus and none of them are particularly enthusiastic about discussing the matter, to be regarded a dirty little secret, like putting too much sugar in your coffee or picking your nose. I have come to believe they fear responses such as "pshaw, how embarrassing! Pluteus are for losers, check out the chanterelles and lobsters I've been finding by the pound".

Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the kind words. Cactu, 1 and 2 are of course russala, you know it. I've no idea about 3 and 4. Picture 5 is indeed Pluteus, i assume the species is cervinus. Numbers 6 and 7 are actually more Pluteus, 6 is P. admirabilis and 7 is P. petasatus. Both of the gill shots are P. petasatus. Number 10 is unknown to me. Kaal-kapje! Heck no that isn't frost thank goodness... If i knew how to pull it off, winter would would be postponed... permanently... in fact, please!!! everyone go out and start your cars right now and just allow them to idle all night, we can beat this damn winter thing if we try. Numbers 11 and 12 are are Mycena luteopallens. Yeah the last one is a blue heron and a few large painted turtles or red ear sliders, my camera was maxed out for that one.

Yeah the shine is pretty distinctive... overall, Pluteus is a pretty distinctive genus for that matter. Do you find many of them in Mexico? They are one of the most ubiquitous woodland mushrooms in the midwestern united states, you encounter them on just about every walk in the woods. More often than not they are in poor condition and riddled with insects. I'm really hoping to photograph Pluteus cyanopus, one of the blue staining and reportedly active species. I've found them on a few occasions but haven't had the opportunity to work on taking a good habitat shot.
I think you have to click the little mountain looking icon to make a url show up in the nomination thread.
thanks again Cactu!!
