? about birthing cakes
    #7358366 - 09/01/07 09:47 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

I was curious about something here. I just put my cakes in a terrarium. They have been there for about 2 to 3 days. There is more white fungus growing on them and some of them look like they have pin heads but they don't look like the same pin heads I have seen in videos. They look like thick hairs branching out a few at a time. Is this normal? Are these the pin heads?

sounds like aggressive mycelium. which is good.

What do you mean aggresive? And why is this good? Is it because they are just going to bloom all at once?

aggressive myc resembles snowflakes in shape, kind of delicate branches shooting out from the cake. mycelium usually spreads like a fluffy cloud after birthing but aggressive myc (imo) grows faster & branches out.

i don't know if it is related to a good pinset though.

that's exactly what it looks like. I will post up some pics if I can get some good ones. Some of my jars have some good Rhizomorphic growth, and some of them have just the regular cloud look that you were talking about. Strange thing is some of them are the same strain.

Thanks for the help much appreciated,

when you get more fluffy mycelium on your cakes it means your humidty level is too high...humidty lvl for starting new pins is at about 70% but once you have them you want to keep your humidty around 80-85%.If you dont have a humidty gauge, get one and try to keep your lvl's at 70 until you get agressive pins.

So it's not to late to get pins? And how do I lower the humidity? Should I leave the top off for a couple of hours?

what??? humidity needs to be at 95%-100%.

and what are aggressive pins? pins are pins. on cakes you get a lot of pins but only a handful (sometimes only one) will grow big.

and 2-3 days without pins is normal. i've had pins with 2 days but only once. i'd say you will get pins in a few days. just keep the humidity up and the temperature should be at 22C-25C.

I appreciate all your help. Also once I start harvesting my mushrooms is it true that I can pick some off the cakes and leave the cakes to birth more mushrooms? So your not in the U.S.? I say that because you wrote Celcius instead of ferenheit. And I also have some casing as well. They have been in the casing for about 6 or so days and still nothing? Does it usualy take longer to birth using the casing method?

yeah, basically if you want to leave some pins or small shrooms growing you can pick those that have veils opened or whatever. generally the first big shrooms are as big as they get on the cake, all that follow are somewhat smaller. but with a good pinset yeah you can pick the first mature ones and leave smaller ones to catch up. but once you pick all the shrooms off the cake take off all the aborts too. those are pins that have "aborted" their growth - pins that can kind of shrivel up and turn black/blue from the cap.

once all shrooms are off the cake dunk it.

i live in europe, i find the celsius system to be less confusing.

with the casing method you don't actually "birth" it, you wait until the myc pokes through the top layer. i'm more into cakes so i hope someone can give you better advice about casings.

good luck with the cakes!

:skittles:

I just noticed today that there is slightly a shade of yellow it looks like on one of my cakes. It is one of the fresh ones that I just put in there yesterday. The yellow is hard to see. It doesn't really look like a contaminant. Do you think it's because the humidity is to high? I left my terrarium open just a tiny bit to let out some of the humidity, was this OK to do?

From now on I'm only messing with cakes. I don't really like the casing method either. Plus I obviously see more visual results when starting the cakes as opposed to the casings.

Half the fun is watching the shit grow. So casings are out for me.

Again thanks for all the help.
