Amanita Muscaria
    #7298402 - 08/15/07 06:17 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

I was in colorado the other day after doing a 14 teener (14,000 ft. mountain) and right before I got back to the trail head I found what (to me anyway) looked like a textbook case of Amanita Muscaria. Bright red concave top with completely white specs. thick white stem that bulges at the bottom, and white gills. Now I know this is useless without pictures but I had to give them to my friend immediately when I got home to dry if they were to be any use to me. I'm not really asking you to identify these off my description. But I am asking if there are any amanita's that have a textbook "like" description but are poisonous? I didn't even think about making a spore print at the time and I am kicking myself for it now.

I'm not sure of any red and white Amanitas that are deadly. Any Amanita is going to have a white sporeprint, so that's not going to help you anyway, unless you have a microscope and a pic and description of A. muscaria spores to compare them to...

I think if you're worried about it, you shouldn't fuck around with it. If you're sure, you're sure.

A. muscaria has concentric rings around the base, so you might want to look at ALL the species specific characteristics and verify that it fits all the criteria.

Here are some species of Amanita which often or sometimes display a red cap, or some variant colour of red, similar to A. muscaria:

A. caesarea
A. parcivolvata
A. rubrovolvata
A. jacksonii (syn: A. umbonata)
A. flavoconia
A. frostiana
A. wellsii

Not sure the edibility of all of these, but if you're curious, you should google the names and increase your knowledge of the genus, so you can be certain of your identification.
