Alderman Wants To Tax Bottled Water

Cardenas: Tax Would Help Balance Budget, Benefit Environment

(CBS) CHICAGO Cooling off with bottled water could soon cost you more within the Chicago city limits if one alderman has his way.

Ald. George Cardenas (12th) wants to slap a tax of up to 25 cents on the cost of every bottle to help close a $217 million budget gap.

“People enjoy jogging or driving with a bottle of water. There’s a cost associated with this behavior. You have to pay for it,” said Cardenas, one of Mayor Richard M. Daley’s staunchest City Council supporters.

Cardenas noted that there’s a nearly $40 million shortfall in the city’s water and sewer funds, in part because of a decline in water usage.

Wendy Abrams, a spokeswoman for the city’s Office of Budget and Management, said the mayor’s budget team will “work with aldermen on any new idea aimed at generating new revenue for the city.”

I'm all for it, bottled water uses far too many resources to ever be justifiable as an alternative to city water. We have a great public water system in America, other countries struggle to even provide water while we waste it, its a disgrace.

What the fuck? No seriously... What the fuck? I can understand taxing cigarettes even though I'm a rabid pro-smokers rights individual but there's a cost associated with the behavior of drinking a bottle of water? Is this motherfucking cracker out of his mind? What country am I living in? Ridiculous.

More like, what planet are we on. It is ridiculous.

I wonder if this "reason" is just a smokescreen excuse for seizing something despicable to take advantage of. The residents of the greater Chicago land area who all get their water from lake Michigan,  know about how it was just approved for some Canadian Oil company to start dumping tons of arsenic, ammonia and mercury into the lake.

Bottled water sales must be starting to sky rocket in the Chicago land area.

What bastards government people are. First, they make the cities supply of fresh drinking water from the lake toxic, then charge people extra taxes for buying pure spring water in a bottle. Horrible!

Mayor Daily has been touting himself as being a progressive mayor who is launching being a Green City program. What is he doing to fight the toxic polluting of the lake?

Watch him get voted in again.

in my opinion this isn't too bad of an idea, bottled water has gotten way out of control. maybe this will discourage people from buying before corporations start sucking our lakes dry. maybe not so much that last one, but seriously, there is way too much engergy wrapped up in bottling and shipping copius amounts of the stuff around when you can just turn your faucet on a start guzzling. not to mention people have found more of these bottles end up in the landfill instead of the recycling center as well.

Bingo. Bottled water is a nightmare of conservation. All that plastic has to come from somewhere.

Not everybody lives someplace that they can "just turn your faucet on and start guzzling". Do that around here and you will end up in the hospital with who knows what disease. My "tap water" comes from rain that I collect and store in tanks under the house. All of my drinking water is bottled.

While drinking water anywhere in the US will not make you immediately sick, it is also true that the amount of mercury, lead and ammonia in our tap water is increasing. That means our babies are fucked. I wouldn't be so oppossed to taxing bottled water if the government wasn't already making cash money by allowing corporations to leave their waste in our communal drinking water.

What a vicious system.

not always true. I've had plenty of tap water in several 3rd world countries after a night out, waking up with a dry mouth and no bottles in sight

sure i will concede that it can be a neccessity in some less developed places, but for the majority of first world countries, i have got to say its out of control.

In 2006, Americans spent $48-million on 119-million liters of water that had to be transported 8,000 miles to the United States from Fiji. This only accounts for 1/10th of the islands total exports to the world. And that is only Fiji, the supplier for only 19% of the worlds total bottled water supply.

Imagine how much petroleum we burn not only in shipping this water but in the manufacture of the plastic bottles that contain it. Think also of the resulting pollution and garbage..

Taxing bottled water doesn't sound like such a bad idea to me. We have established standards of water quality here, where water comes from our taps usually for free. In my opinion there is not a valid reason to rely on bottled water to such a degree. I buy a bottle occasionally when I'm out of my way and thirsty. I bought one three months ago and it's still full because I fill it with tap water between trips to and from work.

Sounds like an excuse to make up for misappropriated funds.
