Perseid Meteor Shower

Calling all stargazers and amateur astronomers. Perseids this weekend. Don't miss it. I'm gonna try to get lucky and capture some pics. Either way it'll make for some nice early morning sky watching. I have to be in Coachella for work again Monday morning so I'm gonna go in the middle of the desert late Sunday night/early Monday morning and watch them until the sun rises and I have to go to work.

Middle of the month of August every year.
Wiki
The Perseids (PURR-see-idz) are a prolific meteor shower[1] associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle. The Perseids are so called because the point they appear to come from, called the radiant, lies in the constellation Perseus. However, they can be seen all across the sky. Because of the path of Swift-Tuttle's orbit, Perseids are mostly visible on the northern hemisphere.
The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the greatest activity between August 8 and 14, peaking about August 12. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches a hundred or more per hour.
Meteor showers occur when Earth moves through a meteor stream. The stream in this case is called the Perseid cloud and it stretches along the orbit of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it passed by the Sun. Most of the dust in the cloud today is approximately a thousand years old.
However, there is also a relatively young filament of dust in the stream that boiled off the comet in 1862. The approximate rate of meteors originating from this filament is much higher than normal.
The famous Perseid meteor shower has been observed for about 2000 years, with the first known information on these meteors coming from the Far East. In early Europe, the Perseids came to be known as the "tears of St. Lawrence."
To experience the shower in its full, one should observe in the dark of a clear moonless night, from a point far outside any large cities, where stars are not dimmed by light pollution.

It peaks over the next 2 nights. Best time to watch is the early morning hours between midnight and sunrise. Lay back facing northeast and just watch the sky. Could see as many as several a minute if it gets good. Sunday night/Monday morning should be the best. Just do a search for 'perseid metor shower' and you can find all kinds of info and star charts to help you in your stargazing.

Tonight and tomorrow night both. Tomorrow it should peak, but you should see plenty of action tonight as well.

I find they are pretty much all over the sky.
If you've never watched the best advice is just lay on your back and look straight up so you can see as much sky as possible. Relax your eyes so you are not really focusing on one point but the whole sky. You will then spot them in your peripheral vision and be able to focus on them. They are quite quick and normaly finished in under a second.

That's cool, I live where it gets cold at night even durring the summer and my favorite way to stargaze is to grab my chica and drive away from town to find a nice clearing from the trees, then we hop up on the hood over the engine with our backs against the windshield and a blanket and binoculars to check out the fuzzy spots...
