Senate Democrats say their rookies strayed on FISA
    #7276009 - 08/08/07 09:20 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

Harry Reid wouldn't be Senate majority leader without the nine rookie senators who helped Democrats take control of the Senate in last year's elections.

So Reid's office has released a feel good video during the August recess touting the accomplishments of the eight freshmen Democrats, plus independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont. The sleek campaign-like production shows several of the new senators talking about their first seven months in office.

But while Reid owes his leadership position to these newbies, he can also blame them for the embarrassing loss on the foreign intelligence surveillance act (FISA) bill passed over the weekend. Four freshmen Democrats -- Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Jim Webb of Virginia -- voted in favor of the intelligence bill, giving the Bush White House a major victory before Congress left town.

The vote was 60-28 on Friday night, and if just one of the freshmen would have voted with their leaders they could have defeated the bill, because the Senate had set a 60-vote threshold for passage of the FISA bill, which President Bush quickly signed into law on Monday. The top three Senate Democrats, including Reid, voted against the bill, and they have vowed to rewrite the legislation this fall. Five other Democratic freshmen followed their leaders and voted against the bill.

Notably, all four Democratic presidential candidates voted against the legislation, not wanting to give the White House any more authority over warrantless wiretaps.

Despite losing the vote on the eavesdropping bill, Reid today happily touted the fact that "these freshmen senators have worked to make America more secure, strengthen our economy and restore accountability to Washington."

This reminds me of the ludicrous account he gave Mr. Langton, of the despicable state of a young gentleman of good family. “Sir, when I heard of him last, he was running about town shooting cats.” And then in a sort of kindly reverie, he bethought himself of his own favorite cat, and said, “But Hodge shan’t be shot: no, no, Hodge shall not be shot.”

In this regard? Why not talk about their failure to end the BS in Iraq they way they promised in order to get elected? Blame the republicans all you like, fact is, they made a promise and they failed. It is going to cost them.
