Identification Inquiry
    #7244292 - 07/31/07 04:14 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

I'm new to the boards and new to wild mushroom hunting in general so please forgive me if this isnt posted with great details, but I'll do my best.

Image A:

* Habitat: Found in some dried leaves under a (I think mesquite) tree

* Gills: Attached, little distant from each other

* Stem: Moderatly think, hollow

* Cap: Wavy.. some brown and some whitish although the different colored caps look the same in all other aspects.

* Spore Color: Not sure if done correctly, but it was a faint yellow.. although it was done on white paper.

* Bruises: I squeezed it and it got a little darker.. not sure how to properly bruise a mushroom

* Scent: Stank a little

Those look to be from one of the several genera close to Omphalina. Nothing you should consider eating. Not active, probably not poisonous.

Well done ID request.

Happy mushrooming!

every time I find mushrooms that look similar to that they're infested with bugs. And I mean INFESTED. Spiders preying on flies, maggots, earwigs preying on anything they can except the spiders... it's like a little ecosystem of infestation. EWW.

That is exactly what the mushrooms are hoping for.

yeah, I guess so... Anything to get the spores far and wide.

Just seems like they should be growing in tops of trees, to have spores on the wind or something.

I think they do pretty well on the wind from where they are. They seem to use electrostatics, air temperature variations and every other possible thing to their advantage. Take a look at the spore deposits when you can see them, the spores go all over the place, not just down. Cordyceps take over the insects brain and make it go to the top of the tree. I want a culture, does anyone have one?
