Millet questions

Ok, so my favorite supplier for substrate (mycosupply) was out of rye berries. I settled for millet this time. Who knows, it might be good for me to try it... maybe I'll find it to colonize faster or something. Never know. Anyway, a few questions before I get started.
1) The teks I've read say to do it's pre-simmer soaking for 12-14 hours... with rye I always do 24 hour soakings but have even left it soak for 48 hours on occasion just because I've been too busy and it has been fine (past 48 hours I've noticed sprouting though). If I leave millet soak in the jars for 24 hours before I simmer it, will this harm it at all? I was curious how sensitive millet is to this and what happens if I let it soak too long.
2) Anything that is noticeably different from rye in the process that I should know about? All the teks I've read so far on this seem like it's the same deal basically which is great since I'm good at this rye stuff. Soak, rinse, simmer, rinse, pc. Same simmer and pc times, etc. The only thing that threw me so far as different was question #1.
Thanks in advance guys! Your help and support are always a blessing on my hobby.

I tried millet, it was way to small of a grain for me. I busted almost all the grains by boiling just a few mins. I don't think you are supposed to boil them, just soak for 24 hours and use. I soaked some for 48 and had millet sprout stew. But getting them dry was hard (I normally use a hair dryer to speed up the process, but it just blew the millet away).
So I would say:
-soak for 24 -let drain (while still steaming hot, to aid in drying process. ref. R.R.) -PC it!
Le me know though, I have trouble getting rye around here, and I need something I can do .... quicker.

I'm pretty sure if you par boil them first, i.e. boil them for just a minute or two that will prevent them from sprouting at all. The hi temps render the sprouting 'mechanism' usless? I'm curious because I've been a wheat grain man for a long time but would like to try millet. Pretty sure thats right. Anyone else know?

If you have trouble getting rye try MycoSupply. Great rye... but unfortunitly they are out right now which is why I went with their millet. But when they stock back up I'd recommend you grab a bunch. Their rye is great!
Drying rye isn't an issue. I just leave it in the strainer for 24+ hours until it's completely dry on the outside of the rye. I used to leave it in the strainer for 2 hours but the outside was still too moist and I got a lot of sour rot... but since I switched to leaving it in the strainer after simmering for 24+ hours it has worked amazing and moisture content has been great ever since I switched to doing this. I'm sure if I leave millet in the strainer long enough it will be dry enough too... how long it will take, we will see.
But does anyone know for sure about simmering times? And maybe if you did it at a lower temp then you do for the rye grains they won't burst as quickly as you stated? Rye seems like a more hardy grain to work with, able to withstand more. To the guy who boiled em... no... you don't boil rye either. You simmer them. Simmer is not the same thing as boil. Anyway, hoping someone who's had success with millet can tell me how long to simmer and any other useful tid bits they've found in their successful millet ventures. Thanks ahead of time!

I bought 50 lbs of this millet. I WILL figure out how to make it work to the best of it's capability by the time the damn bag is gone. lol. And I will post my results and how I did it for everyone else to check out too. But help is still appreciated to save all the grain I'll probably waste trying to figure out the best way/times to do this with millet on my own. lol

Most gardening stores sell millet for birdseed. Haven't you ever run your hands thru that stuff as a kid? laterz!

I've tried millet . The only problem I've had is drying it . It's so small it seems to trap the water in it . I had to keep mixing it as it dried to let the water out . Then I just started adding a little verm. to it .

I had bad luck with millet, but I wasn't preparing it properly at first, so I wound up going through a lot of trial and error.
As has been said above, the things to watch out for are definitely germination (they pop their shells in a heartbeat) and water retention (impossible to drain).

Millet was a bad experience for me too.. I guess i was too used to how wide of a range WBS has as far as moisture goes. The milo and millet mix evens eachother out. With millet i always went too dry, but learned it eventually after going through a whole 20lb bag.
It does have one very large benefit that you'll find over rye though. One grain of rye is the same size as about 4-8 grains of millet... so you get that many extra points in your spawn that the myc can start from. Ive also found that millet will take an extra day to re-knit over most other grains.
happy trails

Yeah--if it were easier to work with, it would be quite preferable to rye, I think, since a jar of rye winds up growing so much unnecessary connective mycelium to bridge the gaps. That's energy being spent, there.

I use WBS, and the mix I use is mostly millet. I just used the WBS teks and had awesome success. Full colonization in about 5-7 days, and real nice spawn for horse poo. 24hrs, is PLENTY. make sure to not boil the grain, or maybe don't even worry about the steaming part. Rinsing is very important though because it has alot of starch. Also after PCing make sure to shake as soon as its cool enough to grab, or it will turn into a solid. And have good gas exchange on the jars.
I am gonna try rye next, but just to see if i can get as good a yield.
So I hear, it is!!

Spawn type shouldn't affect yield significantly. If it's the main substrate, sure... but not spawn.
How long do you like to drain your millet, since you don't steam?

Drain for an hour then spray it down for about 5 min with my sink hose. Give it a press with my hands in the colander, and load the qt jars up.
