Does anyone have any tips? I'm trying to master F major, but it is not simple. Sigh.

just keep at it
a lot of times you can have open strings and it sounds even cooler, in my opinion
good luck!! you'll get it!

Thanks, man. I'm going to keep trying, and I love the idea that it sounds cooler a little off. You rock.

it's all about practice. i remember i used to play for like at least 4 straight hours everyday when i first started. i haven't played in a while so i'm a little rusty but feeling those strings vibrating against my fingertips is great.

the F is the hardest because it costs more strength to make all the strings sound right. better start practicing with a higher bar chord like an A
and in the mean time play the F like this until you have enough strength:
e-1- b-1- g-2- d-3- a-x- E-x-

honestly, I've always thought the four-string method of the f chord is even harder than the full barre.
to whoever said the b chords are bitches: agreed.

it is a little weird fretting the high E string on the first fret but you don't even really have to do that in my opinion, the high E open sounds good
good pointing out that "shortcut" F chord, I completely forgot about it I played F that way for a while, still do sometimes actually

For barre chords, most of the pressure used to fret the barre should come from the weight of your fretting arm, as if it's 'hanging' from the neck. Only use enough 'squeezing' pressure to make sure all the notes ring clearly.
F major at the first fret is one of the hardest chords to get used to, especially on an acoustic.

Don't push so much with your thumb. That hurts my hand too.
Also, instead of barring all the frets with your index finger, use it just to hold the F, or 1, on the highest string, then use your thumb to play the F, or 1, on the lowest string. I find that way easier to switch between the chords than when using the barre chords.
E-1- Index B-2- Middle G-3- Pinky D-3- Ring A-x- E-1- Thumb

Now that I think about it, I was quite wrong. It should be:
E-1- Index B-1- Index G-2- Middle D-3- Ring A-x- E-1- Thumb

Ok, this is just my advice.. but. Start doing pushups on your finger tips and stretch your fingers daily too. Coordination exercises with your fingers ... like spinning individual fingers on both hands at once, rotating through all your fingers.
I do pushups on my fingertips. It realy helps grip strength and finger coordination.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, but my thumb is up there anyway so I might as well use it.

That 'thumb' voicing for the E-form barre chords sounds really good to my ears, I guess because the low fifth is left out of the chord, cleaning it up a little. Jimi Hendrix did it all the time. I don't do it because my hands are relatively small.

I think it jangles a bit more that way. I like picking between the root bass note and the other strings. Jimi Hendrix looks kind of funny when he does it. If you've ever seen Woodstock, Richie Havens barres the whole 6 strings with his thumb.

damn, i know this is a 5 year old thread but
i realized i couldnt get them all to sound out with finger strength alone so i started to push up on the strings with my arm instead
didnt even realize i could and should be pulling down instead
thanks for the tip
