Hit jockpot!
    #7222225 - 07/25/07 01:21 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

So i just found out today that a local mushroom farm gives away free compost, The stuff they use to cultivate mushrooms on, most likely, so i went to check it out, and it's amazing stuff!

When i was digging into the pile and loading it into bags, there was white mycelium everywhere. This stuff stank pretty gnarly as well.

I'm thinking about doing a pan subb LC, and then spawning to a large tub filled with this compost, what do you think?

also, they have skyscrapers of rotting hay out back, i almost orgasmed when i saw it. prime hunting if i can get past security.

You sure it is compost and not spent mycelium?

wont it be kinda hard to grow something on the compost that already has mycelium everywhere. I have a feeling the already growing myc will out colonize the subs.

That'll be spent mushroom compost.
No longer much good for growing mushrooms so the mushroom farm give it away.

Great for the garden, but I doubt you get a good grow from it.

Yeah, it's hard to get a good grow off of compost that have already had the nutes ripped off.

It's "mushroom compost" and they sell it via Home Depot and other stores as well. Not worth trying, sorry about your find :/

If you have a house get a 55 gallon drum and make your own compost.that will be better than any store can provide.

The drum is optional, it's just a lot easier on the eyes if you have a small yard.

But absolutely, without a doubt, homemade compost is _the_ best thing for any type of gardening. I could go on for hours on different things you use compost and/or compost tea for...but as a substrate, it absolutely is the tits!

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.
