My Salvia grow, quick question...
    #7218492 - 07/24/07 02:55 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys. I bought a Salvia cutting about ten days ago. The first pic is when I first received and planted my cutting and the other is the plant today.

My question is... I feel that the soil might be a little bit too tight for the plant. Is there anything that I can do to get the soil looser or perhaps replant it in something else at this stage in its growth?

Also, the damaged leaves are from shipping. Will this repair or is this damage permanent?

Thanks

Usually before putting a plant in a pot or in the ground I take the soil it in (if it was bought already sprouted) and break it up a bit, no so that it loses shape but so that it's looser and has cracks.

mix some perlite with your soil to loosen it up and add drainage and the leaves will probably get worse or stay bad but the new leaves are the ones you worry about not the old ones. also cut those two leaves at the bottom off that are touching the soil, thats no good. how much are you watering it?

I've been watering the plant every morning. I mixed in some of those liquid absorbing crystals into the soil. 95% of them are in the bottom of the pot but there are some in the soil.

The soil should be pretty airy. I mixed in about an 1/8th of the soil perlite. In addition, the plant was potted in fresh soil right out of the back, not pressed down. I was just afraid that my watering has caused the soil to settle too much.

So cut off the ones touching the soil eh? Will that cause bacterial growth? my poor little guy is going to look pretty bare without them.

i wiould change the soil and deffinatly stop watering. if you keep watering like that you are gunna kill it. wait untill the soil get completely dry before you water it. my soil is 1/2 organic garden soil and 1/2 perlite and its doing wonderfully. i water once every week or two when the plant wilts.

yeah, defenitely stop watering the poor thing. Those water crystals you added arent gonna help the situation either.

Apache Shamans giving you good advice, i suggest you follow it.

The water crystals are mainly to avoid deep root rot. Its just to absorb water that would normally congregate at the bottom of the pot.

the water crystal i suppose are perlite or vermiculite? if its perlite its ok and it may help drainage. you are gunna drown it though if you keep watering it like that. im about to go enjoy some of my homegrown right now :psychsplit:. good luck.

No the water crystals are this stuff you can buy at walmart. There like grains of sand but each one can swell up like 1000% of its original size when it holds water. It allows the plant a "solid" water resevior it can dip into.

I'm definitely going to slow down the watering though, thanks guys.

your actually encouraging root rot by having them in there man. Its making your soil hold onto alot of extra water that would pass through and flow out the drainage holes.

water crystals work best when growing outdoors in the ground.

I'd love to I suppose. Any recommendations on how i'd go about that without having to re-pot the plant?

Alright guys, Im going to repot with a 50% soil 50% perlite mix with some gravel at the bottom of the pot to allow for drainage and aeration.

I've taken a hard look at the leaves that were there when I received the cutting and I realize they were all badly damaged and just barely hanging on. They've been cut off. I haven't' watered the plant in about 3 or 4 days and I still haven't noticed any sign of any wilting. I'm not going to water until I see some wilting.

I have noticed new leaves growing out of the top of the plant, however one of the leave has a hole in it, and just a tiny bit of brown on the edges. Is this from the overwatering?

I should mention that I have removed the humidity tent. I live in New England and right now it is as humid as the inside of a dolphins asshole. On the back of the main stem though there is some browning (see picture). Is this a humidity problem?

Apacheshaman,

How'd the sampling from your own plant work out for ya? Did you smoke or chew? When you smoke it how many leaves does the trip for you?

Don't worry about browning or leaves falling off. only worry about the new leaves that form. Browning on the tips is normal. my plant lost all its leaves when i adjusted it to its new environment and its doing fantastic now. your worry wayyy too much. read more information on the plant. its a really laid back plant. about the wilting, it probably wont Wilt till well after the top of the soil is dry.

Alright, I've taken care of some business.

First off. Re-potted the plant into a 50/50 perlite/garden soil mixture.
No water absorbing crystals were added an I lined the bottom of the bot with small rocks to allow for drainage.

I haven't watered the plant in about the week. There has been no wilting yet, but the soil is getting rather dry. I have been misting the plant 2-4 times a day as I'm around. It is not in a humidity tent anymore.

It seems to like the situation. There are two leaves near the top that are getting respectable.

Here's a pic, I'll continue to update this grow as time goes on.

lookin good! wait till it wilt before you water. it will be scary the first time because it will look as if it is dead but in an hour it will be nice and purky.
