Always, including this statement.
-------------------- "What is in us that turns a deaf ear to the cries of human suffering?" "Belief is a beautiful armor But makes for the heaviest sword" - John Mayer Making the noise "penicillin" is no substitute for actually taking penicillin. "This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it." -Abraham Lincoln

And isn't the view you just presented a one-side view? One that does not leave room for the other perspective(s)?

All the time....
You get a better understanding of the "opposite" and thus could lead to a stronger belief in the original belief.

fool: [noun] a person who lacks judgment
what I said is a fact not open for argument
you are not able to pass good judgment on a situation unless you consider all sides evenly

And do you consider you made a good judgment when you made that assertion? Does it universally apply?

Yes , but the psyche has to be protected against the overworking of this technique..it possible to go native and start to 'be-living' the point of view you actually do not align with if its overdone.
For instance a mantra often repeated is to "be your own worst critic" ,, and the logic is sound . but if its done too often and not tidied up afterwards the collateral of all the criticisms can linger in the psyche (thats one of the best uses of psilosibin for me to realign my psyche to what i should be-live - psychological/spiritual spring cleaning etc) .
I dont practice this in public forums however , it just seems unwarrantably destructive to spread it around like that to me , its generally an internal dialog for self correction and fault finding ..
For instance if thinking criticism of someone for an percieved personality fault i have found it useful to turn that criticism back on myself by way of a philosophical test of validity. But its a fairly dangerous policy , the criticisms even if stretched to the point of fabrication can assume in that mind space a life of their own .
In public forum tho .. no not intentionally ever really, it seems to destructive and serve no constructive evolutionary purpose .
In a nutshell i recall a saying attributed to Jesus ..
Quote:
.. asked if there was foods that the seeker should be aware of .. Jesus replied that no its generally not such a issue at all what goes into the mouth in that regard .. rather it is with regard to the words that come out of out mouths that are important ..
And again from "the 300"'s opening scenes Quote:
".. Before you speak , Persian , know that in Sparta everyone - even the kings messenger - is held accountable for the words of his voice .."
-------------------- It's a beautiful lie .. It's a perfect denial . Such a beautiful lie to believe in So beautiful, beautiful it makes me .. Nikopol: You piece of shit! Your objectives are shit. Your filthy rapist god ambitions are shit. You're full of shit, Horus! Horus: Coming from a human, remarks like that don't carry much weight. Nikopol: But all that it is not worth of prodigy of your saliva, Jill.

it's important to have someone play the devil's advocate...by doing so you and whoever you are debating may discover something new.

He never said "only a fool would argue both sides", so apparently he is a fool for not arguing both sides of his point of view....

I never lie, cheat, steal, or argue opposite of the truth. I swear.
-------------------- [quote]We don't need anyone to teach us sorcery, because there is really nothing to learn. What we need is a teacher to convince us that there is incalculable power at our fingertips. What a strange paradox! Every warrior on the path of knowledge thinks, at one time or another, that he's learning sorcery, but all he's doing is allowing himself to be convinced of the power hidden in his being, and that he can reach it. "Do you ever argue the opposite of what you really think?" Only in my mind, so my discussion partners/oponents will have a wild open field to play And I will play with them all along trying to keep my and their mind set up
