white gills?
    #7205358 - 07/21/07 03:08 AM (16 years, 8 months ago)

That's a pic of 4 cubes that came from one cake. The strain was either ecu or b , but not both. are there albino cubes or is that a growth characteristic i've never seen before? And how is it possible that there's 2 colors on one cake?

this happened with several other cakes from the same batch, but differe

Has to do with when you picked them. They weren't sporulating yet. Gill color (like mold color) is all about catching them when they're sporulating. That's why trich can be white, if you see it early on, and so can cube gills.

Or else you're growing amanitas by accident. Oh noes, it's a destroying angel!

naw i think it is a genetic defect prolly just some weird substrain.trich can be white because it's mycelium is white spores are green.

Yes, exactly.

Gills are colored by spore-producing cells. That's why they have a color that tends to resemble (though not exactly) the spore color, just like trich can be white when it's not sporulating (it turns green when it does, because its spores are green). But yeah, those do look TOO white, on second thought. I don't think they're just immature, now that I'm zooming in.

Can you print those? What color are the spores? I don't get it, spore color is more or less standard. The only variation I've seen in cube spore/gill color is the redboy strain. Red I can believe, because it's somewhat close to purple, but white seems impossible.

Hey, here's a thought--maybe they're sterile. Some sort of deformation of the basidia.

Yeah whatever it is those two aren't sporulating. Take a spore print to make sure. They must be sterile mutations unless they're ultra-slow. I have seen whitish gills of cubensis in pics before.

Well, there's a mutation you could isolate and enjoy, if it weren't totally undesirable and impossible to legally share with others.

Great pic man, learning experience for me. I guess I should've guessed sterility first, considering it's probably the most common non-lethal result of genetic mutation there is.

i know a friend that grows edible mushrooms and isolates mushrooms like that so he dosent have to deal with the mess that comes along with spores dropping everywhere.

Interesting approach, I know how he feels. I love B+, but it's a little oversexed.

Clone the sporeless fruits. They don't make a mess, and many growers have noticed increased potency from sporeless strains.

Do you think this is because the mushroom doesnt have to use the energy to produce spores, therefore more is availible for the production of actives? Kinda made me think about sinsamilla for a minute when i read that.
