Newbie Q: Cakes --> Casing

This is my first attempt ever with fungi, so any helpful comments would be much appreciated. Here's my setup, they're all half pints
8 Brazilian (BRF) 8 Equador (Popcorn) 8 B+ (BRF)
All of the jars are 90%-100% colonized. I birthed 4 cakes, and cased one of the Equador's in MGMC. FC conditions are 95-100% RH and 76 Degrees. The cakes look as if they are a little on the dry side but they do have some hyphal knots, and the casing looks quite happy.
Is there any reason I can't take the cakes that have been in the FC for a couple of days and break 'em up and case them? In general, once mycelium starts going into fruiting mode, can you bring it back into veg. for a couple of days then coax it back into fruiting mode again? Will breaking up the cakes for casing cause havoc if it has already fromed some hyphal knots? Thanks for any help!

i would say if you want to case then do it at birth. If your cakes have already entered "fruiting mode" they may not recover after crumbling and/or they may not colonize the casing layer.
Once mycelium enters fruiting mode it does not colonize well.

Ah, thanks for the response. Thats what I was afraid of. I probably would have been OK had i cased 'em 2 days ago, but yesterday I decided to roll 'em in MGMC and spray em. Now that I rolled n sprayed em they are taking off. They were totally dry and just stalled before but now they're progressing.
The problem is that I could only get the MGMC to stick on the tops of the cakes and around the base on the foil tray. The majority of the sides (the largest surface area) are still bare. They seem like they are happy colonizing the MGMC that did stick to em, but I'm wondering how i'm gonna get the sides cased/rolled. I'm thinking about chopping them and doing them wafer/sea of shrooms style.
If they are colonizing the MGMC that i put on em, wouldn't they have no problem colonizing a casing layer? Or would the shock of being chopped to bits be to monumental? I'm thinking chopping them in half would be the best way to psuedo-case them sea of shrooms style, while inflicting the least amount of trauma. Any thoughts?
P.S. I learned my lesson on this one, its crumble 'n case from now on!

you would be better off to just go ahead and let those fruit, then spawn and case the ones that are almost colonized. that way you will have some shrooms coming soon just to tide you over til they come in piles at a time. the sea of shrooms sounds like a good idea, but will work best if done right at birth. ive yet to try it. just let semi-nature take its course on this one.

Yea I just did my first G2G about a day n a half ago. I sacrificed a b+ jar to make 20 jars, no signs of contams yet. Right now I'm just spawning jars to jars, to keep a constant stream of colonized jars at hand, which I then directly case. I figure I oughta get a couple cycles in before I start spawning to bulk substrate. I know alot of people dislike popcorn on this board, but I'm having great success with it. Anyways... enough rambling...
I was thinking about this cake/casing thing a little bit and I had a revelation. I think there should be no problems casing these jars. What led me to this conclusion is the practice of cloning. When you clone, your taking a sample from the base of a mushroom (the mycelium is clearly in fruiting mode) and placing it on uncolonized substrate, which it then colonizes and eventually goes back into fruiting to make more mushrooms. If you can do this, then why not case a cake? The only issue I could forsee is that perhaps it takes alot of recovery time switching from fruiting to colonizing and vice versa. I think i'm gonna try it on one of my cakes, n see how it goes.
