Schizophyllum commune contamination
    #7117296 - 07/02/07 02:03 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

There seems to be a small surge in reports of this easily identified contaminate in cubensis grows. If I missed any or if new ones appear, please add to this post.

Recent posts with Schizophyllum commune contamination.

Ban Hau Thanon 6/19/07 Secondary report of possibly Penis Envy and KSSS also contaminated.

Penis Envy 7/1/07

Chinese cubensis 4/13/07

Unnamed cubensis 6/24/07

Since none of the posts above specify where the syringes were purchased, it is difficult to know if the problems are related.

A good page with details about this species.

Hahaha, crazy!!

Looks like the most widespread mushroom on earth has found a new host!  First it's gotta take its toll on the aids patients and their lungs, and now it's gonna wreak havoc on poor shroomerites and their grows!

A conversation with the poster explains that this is not related to any of the other more recent outbreaks as it was generated from material purchased over a year ago. Strain is Hawaiian.

After my contamination with the Ben Hua Thanons I inoculated 9 brf jars with PE and six with KSS. So far it appears that I have 2 of each contaminated with Schizophyllum commune.

Hawaiian 8/8/07

I wasn't able to find a common source for any of these infections. Although some of the contaminated grows were from vendor spores, many were from homemade prints. I am at a loss to explain why there are so many reports this year but at this time it doesn't seem to be confined to any particular vendor. Perhaps there is just a high environmental spore load of this species due to ideal weather conditions.

Yeah, it is very unusual. I am a bit surprised that it was not one vendor. Good work collecting the data.

6/22/08 unnamed strain

Contrast increased to show detail.

This may be a seasonal contaminate as reports seem to be occuring mostly June-August.

B+

Are you saying that these came from a vendor in the syringe?

Thanks for the additional data point.  At first I thought there was a common source for this mushroom but now I think its mostly just environmental contamination.  That doesn't mean it can't contaminate a syringe, but there is no evidence that any vendor has sent out a batch of spore syringes contaminated with Schizophyllum.  There are just single unrelated outbreaks that seem to peak in the Spring-Summer.  Schizophyllum is just one tough S.O.B. and seems to grow everywhere.

How bout this?
Almost goddamn december and it ain't warm up here!

In the second image I tried to get into focus a weird little guy that almost looks like a little mushroom coming out the side, but the color is not darkened... It's not very focused but you can see the shape. Enjoy! Feel free to impart your judgement.  :dancer:

hmmm... starting with the inverted caps...
I think it is pretty much hit or miss at this point. So we'll just have to wait and see. Kinda leaning towards schizo but that's cause I'm a pessimist.

Well. Just another one for the books, I guess.
Has there been much discussion looking at where in the process they most often latch on? I didn't really let this guy consolidate while I have for my others. I'm hoping when I birth them, they will be uncontaminated. I will most definitely be doing a major sanitization of my grow room operation. I suppose it's a good excuse.
I looked around and haven't found much info. So I will keep this thread posted on whether or not the other cakes do well when I birth them to a crystal clean environment. Thanks for starting this thread or I would have let them grow and it may have become a worse problem.
Just another payment towards my mycological tuition, I suppose.
Wish me luck.
Cheers
