summer solstice… all about the orange
    #7078063 - 06/22/07 12:23 AM (16 years, 9 months ago)

i didn't spend much time messing with my camera on this walk through the woods as the sun was disappearing behind the horizon upon arrival at the clandestine area.
so yeah... how apropos for the sun's day, everything was orange-ish... including the millions of flowers lining the dark path on my way home to drink rum and club soda mixed with... orange juice.... to go with my meal of super sweet smelling orange chanterelles.
I'm slightly inebriated so goodbye... oh yeah... one more thing... not a single tick... usually there is something like a ten to one ratio favoring ticks to mushrooms.
being careful not to step on the babies

positioned and ready for examination under the alien green microscope

not sure what this is

That little Marasmius thing next to the second photo is really cool. I am unable to find Chanterelles that small here in California, as we have a different species. Any idea if the flavor is the same?

Ferret: The orange mushrooms are Chanterelles.

hey there wikedferret, long time no post... they are chanterelles, Cantharellus somethingerotherous, an extremely edible mushroom with a fragrance reminiscent of apricots...
i don't know about the coconut rum thing... i didn't have any golden rum damnit... it all disappeared during a day long mojito experiment which resulted in a dismal culinary failure and extreme drunkenness

lol, well to my opinion parrot bay is the best, for coconut rum at least. tho it is quite expensive, tho i cant price check as i am not allowed in a liquor store i am not yet at the age o 21, and i think you should try it when you are sober so you can enjoy it, about 5/8 sprite, 3/8 coconut rum, both cold

This species is particularly flavorful and oh my gosh… the fragrance is amazing, if only it could be bottled… I usually refer to these as C. lateritious.

I’m familiar with a more diminutive variety which generally has more prominent ridges on the fertile surface and is generally more or less bland by comparison… call um C. cibarius in my book, but i think that is totally wrong

Do you find the little C. cinnabarinus in your area?

> This species is particularly flavorful

It sure looks that way.

> and oh my gosh… the fragrance is amazing, if only it could be bottled… I usually refer to these as C. lateritious.

It can be bottled, I am almost sure, via vacuum distillation.

> I’m familiar with a more diminutive variety which generally has more prominent ridges on the fertile surface and is generally more or less bland by comparison… call um C. cibarius in my book, but i think that is totally wrong

I call those C. cibarius, but there is a scientist who is working on making a new name for the large variety of C. cibarius that we find in California. Some specimens can weigh over a pound and sometimes when I go hunting I can't carry all that I find back.

> Do you find the little C. cinnabarinus in your area?

Once I found one on a steep hillside.

Beautiful chanterelles George.

Those look like the same variety I find in Ohio, but I've never seen them up this early.
