anyone saw todays mythbusters? couldn't believe my eyes

they tested the myth that water can protect you from bullets. Lets say you dive in the water and someone outside the water shoots at you . That you will be safe. I was shocked. I knew water will greatly decrease velocity but omg I couldn't believe how drastic

here was the stats

a 9 mm is deadly at 8 feet deep
a shotgun is deadly up 5 or 8
a .223 is not even deadly once reaching 3 feet
a .30 not even deadly at 3 feet
an m1 forget caliber but not even deadly at 3
and even more shocking a .50 not even close to lethal at 3 feet deep

anyone familiar with weapons know a .50 rifle will blow you apart. Anyway when he shot it into the pool the water boom out so big that the splash hit the cieling. But even still it wasn't deadly at even 3 feet deep.

here's the thing the .223 and up all reached at muzzle velocity that are at sonic level speed. Being that it's traveling that fast when it hits the water instead of penetrating through the bullet will shatter in pieces when it makes contact with water. Interesting huh?

i saw that episode awhile back and i can't remember something. Were they using water breaking techniques, like they do with the high-dive, or just shooting at calm water?!

they just fired at still water. well, if you hit calm waters at high speed it's bit like hitting concrete.

shooting calm water... they first were shooting straight down into their own made tank but the shotgun ruptured the tank

so they decided to use a pool instead.... it's freakin crazy, I for sure though the 50 would just burry into the pool

I know but even still, it seems the more velocity the less dangerous. your better off shooting someone in the water with a 9mm handgun than with any of those assault or sniper rifles

while the water is not nearly as dense as the bullet, it has a tremendously superior mass. I would assume basic physics would apply and when the water is 'broken' this changes the ability of the water's mass to absorb the bullet?

There was an episode of Dallas SWAT on A&E awhile back where they were gonna use the .50 with AP rounds to disable a hijacked BigRig. I was sooooo excited, but the shot was called off due to too many bystanders on the side of the road watching the chase!!!!  :fork:

yeah ... I would like this expierement broken down to specifics to explain it. because wow not even at 3 feet deep in water will that gun would do anything to you. Just little fragments will end up sinking whereever the bullet hit the surface. And none of these bullets were hollow points either

oh yeah let me mention the m1 was shot with armor piercing rounds as well as the 50 cal. Now the m1 was enough to easily go through bullet proof glass. Yet the m1 nor the dread 50 could do anything . Hell an indian with a bow and arrow would be deadlier

The 50 cal bullets are big, right?

Bigger the bullet, the more resistance from the water

They are working on a type of bullet that will "super cavitate" in water....essentially make a small pocket of steam around the bullet so that the bullet isn't traveling through water at all.

I'm sure it would... when freestyle ski jumpers practice, they land in a pool that has bubblers going nonstop to make the water much softer.
