will Vermiculite ordered off of ebay be sterile enough??
    #7052603 - 06/16/07 11:59 AM (16 years, 9 months ago)

A fried of mine just ordered both Vermiculite and Perlite from this eBay auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mix-Match-Sphagnum-Peat-Moss-Vermiculite-Perlite-Soil_W0QQitemZ120122462029QQihZ002QQcategoryZ20540QQcmdZViewItem

He was wondering if he should worry about any impurities in the Vermiculite that could infect his mushrooms (he's a first time grower).  If so, is there any way to make sure?  He realizes he'll be sterilizing the Verm in the first steps, but he is concerned about when he does the "dunk and roll".  Any thoughts?

ok, i think you're right... i think he mentioned something about hearing that somewhere too. also, he was wondering...will what he ordered from the auction (1.5 qt verm and 4.5qt perlite) be enough for 10 cakes? recipe calls for 2 cups per 5 cakes ...then you figure another cup for dunk and roll and topping off the jars. can the perlite be reused?

Does anyone know if the Verm will burn (or stick to the cookie sheet) if I cook it for an hour?  Also, can the Perlite be reused with another batch?

Both vermiculite and perlite are mineral and won't burn. They're both produced at temperatures in excess of 1000F, so don't worry about your oven ruining either one.

Also, the larger quantity your order, the better the price will be. I'd avoid silly auctions on ebay. Get a 3 cubic feet bag at your local nursery for less than $15, with no shipping costs.

yes perlite can be reused.... in my FC i plan on putting a 3 inch layer on the bottom and soaking it.. this should keep humidity up and supply my cakes for 2-3 weeks, then i will continue to mist my cakes by hand.. after the cakes are completely done, ill remove them.. take the perlite.. soak it, drain it.. and use it again.

Though on a small scale, verm acts as a metal in the microwave. 999 times out of 1000 it won't matter, but I still don't do it, myself. It's easy enough to toss it in the oven at 400-500F for ten minutes or so.

Yeah, I've got some FILTHY perlite, lots of it in fact, at the bottom of my martha. Sadly, my setup is so bulky that I haven't figured a way to get it out yet, but presently it's got bits of straw, verm, casing, cake, lots and lots of spores... well, let's just say I pour a little h2o2 on it now and then to keep anything airborne from coming off it, but I am not whatsoever confident in its sterility.

Plan is to take it out, strain it in a big colander, and send it through the oven, also at ~500F, to burn away anything that could potentially become contaminated while dehydrating it. Perlite, like verm, will stand up to incredibly high temps, which seems like a good way of getting rid of anything potentially nutrious on it so no bacteria move in to munch on the debris.

As long as you want, and as hot as you want. An hour is certainly enough, especially at high temperatures.

Yeah, I guess my friend was having trouble finding the Vermiculite around town (he checked Home Depot, Petsmart, Ace Hardware, etc) but he never thought to look at a local nursery. Shouldn't Lowes or somewhere similar have it?

Also, he was wondering...he shouldn't need to bake it BEFORE the pressure cooking right?  Just before the dunk and roll??  Or is it best to bake it before mixing it with the water and BRF just to be safe?

no need to bake before PCing, that's the point of PCing.

I had to order vermiculite from mycosupply because i couldnt find it in my area.. however i didnt check smaller nurseries.. i checked both lowe's and home depot. both do stock perlite though.

Yeah, I meant that you should bake it before the dunk and roll only. I have baked perlite and vermiculite, and never had a problem. Hope that helps.

Too powdery, basically. I've had verm that was half decently-coarse and half powdery shit... which means every bag of verm is really a half bag, because all the crappy sandy stuff sinks to the bottom.

how likely is this to happen? it seems like this auction was by a regular planting supply store.
