freezing vs drying
    #7048532 - 06/15/07 03:28 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

last year i picked several thousand wild mushrooms and dried them out for later use. i found that after 3 months, they had lost all potency. quite disappointing. i dont know if they weren't fully dry or what. i was expecting them to last longer than that. this years season has started again. already i have picked probably 1000 and dont want to suffer the same results as last year. if i freeze the mushies just after i pick and wash them will this preserve their potency until i thaw them out?? i dont see why it wouldn't. also if i dry them out, chop them up,weigh them into doses and then freeze them again in a snap lock bag full of water will i have any trouble preserving set doses??? any info appreciated

i hear freezing can be good but make sure they are completely dry before doin it. i also hear grinding and puttin into chocolate is a good way to preserve, because then the oxygen cant even get to them.

If you're going to freeze the shrooms, make sure they stay frozen until ingestion. Psilocybin breaks down fast after removing from freezer.

Moisture - ANY moisture at all is the enemy!

1. Get shrooms ABSOLUTELY bone/cracker dry.
2. Grind until powder dry.
3. Pour into cleaned, sterilised, thoroughly dried glass jar.
4. Tightly screw on lid. Wrap jar in cling-film, rubber band the neck. Wrap jar tightly in tin foil.
5. Store in dry, dark, room temperature place.

I find this method works and in my experience the powder retains pretty much full potency for at least 18 months.

eg. Two weeks ago I took five grams of some Koh Samui powder from a flush grown well over a year ago and at the peak I found myself in a intricate lattice of colours conversing telepathically with the "mushroom people". They were hugging and caressing thoughts they had read from my mind.

No loss of potency there clearly!

if you freeze fresh shrooms the cells expand which causes bruising, turning the shrooms blue, and i assume resulting in a loss of potency.
If anyone can shed more light on the cell expansion part that would be good.
