What IS Scientology?

Well, the other thread certainly seems to be nothing but heresay, conjecture, and posturing. I'm left wondering what Scientology actually is. I've seen it proposed quite often that one has to make the distinction between all of these different aspects of what Scientology is, but isn't all these differences all aspects of Scientology?
What are these aspects? What is Scientology, and what does it offer?

I have that sense as well, but I'm curious as to the specific facets and the nature of "Scientology". What is it?

Realistically, it's the result of a paranormal idea gaining a following and getting out of control. There's hundreds of these ideas going around, even on these forums, about abstract things and how this abstract thing means that abstract thing and scientology is the result of getting enough people to believe in those abstract things.
Towards your questions, I think it has something to do with "thetons" in your body that cause all the physical illnesses in a human body. They audit you (measure your thetons) and then tell you how to train yourself to get rid of them. People say their IQs improve, clearer memory, and improved health all occur after audits.

How exactly is it "out of control"?

I could tell you but according to many on these boards you have to directly experience it, so it's invalid to even question without experiencing. So anything i could provide is irrelevant from this point of view including wiki. Your better off going to an unbiased scientologists forum as they've experienced the most of it.

Ahhhh, I should have been more specific that I am not interested in having this thread as a carry-over from the other thread. I am simply interested in any understanding of the actual phenomenon. Please, no speculation as to whether or not the subscribers to these believes actually are justified in doing so, no sarcastic remarks spilling over from the other thread... please and thank you.

Its kind of like thinking you understand mushrooms because you know some statistics about their use.

Don't wish to derail the topic but some things can only be described by a point of refrence so you can indeed describe mushrooms if you define and come to a sufficient one with another individual. I don't see how this is troubling.

Scientology is composed of over 40 million words researched and developed during the lifetime of Ron Hubbard. It would be impossible to give a complete rundown of the subject here, but let's start somewhere...
Scientology was not "invented" anymore than the first person to discover the cell invented it. Hubbard merely applied engineering principles to the subject of the mind and life and Scientology was the result.
Some of the basic beliefs of Scientology which can be scientifically proven is that man is a spiritual being inhabiting a body and controlling it through the mind.
The mind is the collection of ALL of the spiritual beings recordings, lifetime to lifetime. Much like a filing cabinet, but cross referenced by all the perceptions which we have.
It is the individual's own bad actions, and the subsequent negation of responsibility which cause him to suffer.
This universe is the result of agreements made between spiritual beings.
Additionally, Scientology has an exact technology with which to regain freedom from the cycle of birth survival and death, as sought by just about every other religion/philosophy.
I have placed some actual audio quotes by Hubbard, taken from recordings of his lectures, on Youtube. More will be added as time progresses.

So how does one "practice" Scientology? In which context are these beliefs placed? How does knowing this change one's behavior, in your experience?

Nope, Auditing. The E-meter is just a tool which, during auditing, helps the being locate certain things.

Also, what brings one to the conclusion that these beliefs are founded?
I'm simply seeking more understanding, as there is obviously something going on here with this and I am out of the loop.

Well, that's an interesting question. One can study Scientology data and can improve life with it because Knowledge, Responsibility and Control are intimately related and affect one another.
But through auditing, one is asked specific questions which cause a person to examine things anew and it frees you from past patterns which may very well be holding you down.
But really it's like describing a psychedelic trip to someone...you could talk and talk and talk for years, but until the person experiences it, they really won't know.
