Interesting discovery about tyvek and poly-fil grain filters.

I had some jars i sterilized for inoculation. the jars had both poly-fil and tyvek protection.
Due to circumstances i never ended up using these jars. They sat un-inoculated after sterilization for about 3-4 months.
While sitting. my pet rat pulled some of the poly-fil out of a couple of the jars. There was no noticeable damage to the tyvek beneath the poly-fil. He just pulled out the poly-fil(on some of them he just mostly pulled it out.
After 4 months. Every jar with the poly-fil pulled up was contaminated. The ones with both the poly-fil and tyvek in tact were 100% contam free.
I thought it was interesting. Seems to me poly+tyvek is a better barrier then tyvek alone. Granted i have had success with just tyvek. Most jars don't sit un-inoculated for 4 months.
But i will definetly continue to use both types of filters on my jars.

I use both tyvek and poly fil but I've never had jars make it 4 months without going bad .:(
Now spawn bags are another thing . I'm using two of my first bags I ever inoculated , that was on 3-15 , almost 3 months ago . I didn't use enough LC . I didn't think they would do anything , I just wanted to see how long it took for them to go bad . I checked them a couple weeks ago and they were colonized .

I only use polyfill because I never got around to getting tyvek and it's worked fine so far. I think i have had 1 WBS jar contam out of around 15.

BTW i threw the jars out anyway. the ones that were un-contaminated looked like they still had decent moisture. But why risk it. I'm starting fresh.
Now i just need a non-POS PC so i doesn't take me ALL day to prep 12 jars. I think after this batch i'll get me a nice 15QT or something. will a quality 15 QT PC still perform on a normal range gas stove?

What do you mean by why risk it.. If its already been sterilized, even if its old try it out!!

Because sterilization is never complete. It's only a window of opportunity to get the grains colonized. True steriization would take 24 hours at 15psi, and would turn the grains to mush. RR

My small PC , an 18 quart , does fine on a normal range . My 41 1/2 quart does OK . Just takes up 2 burners .
These 2 will do 42 quarts in 1 1/2 hours
makes doing jars a breeze

it's OT but; If you haven't, See Franti's new-ish documentary(I Know I'm not Alone.) He takes himself and his guitar to the palanstinian occupied territory and to several parts of Iraq, some green zone, some not. It's very cool.
Great stuff.
