When to discard cakes
    #7024280 - 06/08/07 08:57 PM (16 years, 9 months ago)

Hey everyone.
So this is my 1st time growing shroomies, and ive looked thru as many posts as i could, but i couldnt find an exact answer to my question...

When do you know when your cakes are really spent? I think theyve gone through about 2 flushes (?), and im going to try and dunk them tonight, but is there a tell-tale sign when to retire them?

i know this is probably a really stupid 1st timer question, but i dont want to throw out the cakes when they still have potential left in em.

thanks for any kinda insight

I'm new to this also and on my second flush. Been wondering the same thing. Anyone?

one sign is significant shrinkage, spitting out way less fruits, discoloration, bluing, weak shrooms, no shrooms, just doesn't look right. etc.

But when it's spent, why throw it out? Why not eat it?

erm...yeah...

Why the fuck would you "eat it"?

No0dLe is right. No, there is no telltale sign. You'll just watch the cake produce less, and less, usable mushrooms. At some point usually, the cake will become overcome with contaminants and you'll need to throw it out.

Thanks everyone, that makes sense. I have 2 or 3 that are getting pretty small and getting really blue. Ill see if they do anything now that ive dunked them, and if they dont, ill retire them to some yummy subsrate tea.

I read in the fanaticus site that you can make alcohol and magic crystals from spent cakes.

Here's the link... http://www.fanaticus.com/mycoalki.htm

Mine are joining a pile of Hpoo down the street :crazy2:

Okay, here is when you can tell you have spent cakes:

Pick the cake up. Oh shit! It fell apart? Okay, keep picking the cake up.

Insert into trash can.

Seriously, a healthy cake HOLDS TOGETHER. A spent cake falls apart immediately. Easy peasy. While a cake won't always produce GREAT flushes past the second flush, it will almost always produce a little something. Apologies if I am drinking and posting. It happens. I think what I said made sense though.

Good post.

Usually after several flushes the mycelium is so weak that it either dies then contaminates or the cake itself falls apart which renders it mostly useless.

(I'm proud to say I've never eaten a myc-cake.)  Bleh.

Because that would be gross. If you're that hard up, just grow more.

Reasons not to eat spent cakes:

A) Spent cakes are gross. Often, they're pretty heavily contaminated with bacteria.

B) You won't trip from it.

C) Everyone will laugh at you when you mention it.

I think the worst thing about eating spent cakes would be the huge ammounts of verm you are ingesting. After the 3rd flush off his cake the shrooms that grew all aborted and the cake was all bruished and crappy so my friend broke it up into fragments and buried it in his backyard. He told me yesterday that theres a little shroom popping up which is really cool. Bury your spent cakes and mix them with manure or something when you do it for better results.
