Found these all over some dead decaying birch tree's. This is the only shot I got of them , cause it started pouring a second after I took it. I'm fairlyl certain that the gills were connected and the same color as the cap. The caps were dry and kinda crimped around the edges, even the young seemed to carry this characteristic.

I don't mean to question the masters but, looking at my field guide, i would have never guessed that, as they aren't very orange yellow looking to me. What else did you notice that gave it away? Thanks.

kind of an uneducated guess.for starters I've seen this mushroom alot,it grows in clusters.they are in season is another, June through September.the dullness of the orange and its wrinkled appearance says they were exposed to the sun and got a little dry.still it's only speculation as I've read they grow as far west as Michigan and I forget where snoot abides,Wyoming?orange mycena is pretty abundant around here.what gave it away?you can almost see through a mycenas cap and see the lines showing where the gills are,if you understand what I mean?still speculation though, anybody can be wrong and I have been at times.

I agree with coon on the Mycena leaiana ID. The fact that the gills are the same color as the top strongly implies white spores, and they really do have that Mycena look, growing out the wood with that shaped cap.
Questioning the experts is an important thing to do because the experts are sometimes wrong, and the only way you can have any confidence in an ID that some guy on the internet gives you is to see if his peers agree with him.
Keep in mind that the experts are almost always crazy, often extremely stoned, sometimes more than a little bit drunk, occasionally tripping and likely to be on other drugs.
Present company excluded, of course. : )

Ain't nobody whose IDs shouldn't be questioned. The reason the IDs out here are getting pretty good is that we have lots of eyes checking things out, and when one of us screws one up the others let us have it. And that's how it should be.
Happy mushrooming!

Indeed. I have said, scientific progression relies on challenging current views. Many accurate IDs have been made thanks to the critical eye.
Who you callin' an expert, n00b?! Naw... you're with the crazies.
