Good advice to give a NOOB or not?

So I got a little tired of answering a friends "is this contam or bruising" questions; so i offered him up this advice (its something that helped me)

I suggested he take a q-tip dip it in alcohol or lysol, and then rather firmly press it against part of his cake, very shortly the cake should bruise, use that as a reference colour to what is bruised vs what is a contam...

Good advice? Bad Advice?

You tell me...
(however, if its bad advice, the damage has already been done, i've already told him, however if it is bad advice, telling me so may discourage me telling others in the future to do this)

Bad advice. Never touch alcohol or lysol to a mushroom. That would be like jumping off a tall building to see if you can fly.

Molds will be on or above the surface of a substrate or fruit. They will look like a layer of sand or powder laying on the surface. Bruising will be the color of the fruit itself. Imagine if you took food coloring and dropped it on your mushroom. It would soak in and turn the fruit that color-this would be bruising. Now imagine if you took thick paint, and painted the substrate or mushroom. The paint would be a layer above the surface-this would be mold.

tell him to save his qtips for when he actually discovers something odd and if it picks up onto cotton you know you got something
