Alternative Drying Method.

Hi all, I have a batch that I am currently in the process of drying. I have a fan on them at night for about 10 hours each night. I was wondering if I left them for 10 hours under the fan, then during the daytime in an airtight desiccant chamber for about 14 hours, and repeat this process over a period of 3 or so days. Would this be an effective drying method or can you not leave wet shrooms in an AIRTIGHT desiccant chamber? I would just leave them under the fan for 48 hours then put them in the chamber but because of relevant reasons I do not have this option. Gimme input, thanks.

Where did you get the idea that 10 hours was the proper time to air dry them? That's pointless-- keep the air on them and they will dry almost completely.
Keep them under the fan for a few days, constantly, then you can switch them to your des. chamber if need-be.

Or go on craigslist and find a food dehydrator that works at 95-100F. Got one for twenty bucks.

Every time SWIM has used a dehydrator it has destroyed potency.

I plan on using a dehydrator to dry mine once they're ready. How long does it usually take?

I have a big wide but not wery high tupperware container, the kind you use to store clothes in under the bed.
I have 4 pounds of silica gel on the bottom, spread out as a layer, a wire mesh ontop and then the mushies.
When the silica goes pink (after about a week and a half of drying), I put it in the oven for ten minutes and it regenerates.
It takes about 5 days to dry a pound of mushies to cracker dry and no heat applied

Most dehydrators work at 150F.
I think dehydrating longer than absolutely necessary (i.e. leaving dry cubes in while fresh ones dehydrate, just to "make sure"), even at 95F, might reduce potency. I'm concerned that a friend may have had a weak experience as a result, though I am too sensitive to psilos to be able to say anything comparatively.

this is exactly what my situation is. I cant have the fan running all days because i still live at home and my parents might come in and see whats going on. i leave the fan running over the shrooms while i sleep (about 10 hours each night during the week). I was wondering if the method I stated above would be quicker/more effective than just leaving them under a fan 10 hours daily? Hope this clears up my question

I do this and don't even use the fan. It just sits under the bed. The mushies go in strait after picking. I don't wash em tilll after, when I use a soft toothbrush.
The silica gel is the dissecant. It is one of the more expensive ones but you can reuse it again and again and again
So your system should work fine

Awesome, would DampRid work just as well? I don't have any silica gel.

I imagine it would, but you can only use it once though as calcium cloride cannot be regenerated.
Silica gel works better, but should work still
If you do try it, post here and tell us how well it worked.

alrigthy, i dont really have time to make an advanced chamber but could i just take a strainer put it over a little bucket and put the Damprid in the strainer, then put that in the center of a plastic ziplock bag and lie the shrooms around the desiccant strainer? or do the shrooms have to be elevated above the desiccant for it to be effective?

As long as you have any TOTALLY SEALED container with a dissecant in it and the mushies inside also, in direct contact with the dissecated air, it will work
Another advantage of sillica gel is that it doesn't produce a liquid as damprid does.
