Anxiety/depression drugs
    #6981461 - 05/29/07 10:43 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

A friend of mine has severe anxiety, and she's going to be put one of these drugs:

-Cipralex
-Celexa
-Effexor
-Palix CR

She, and I, don't know anything about them, so I'm looking for information and experiences with these drugs, if at all possible, so she can make a decision (she was told to research them and pick one, as far as I know.)

Personally, I would not take ANY of those drugs. Brain chemistry is a dangerous thing to mess with. These drugs will cause long term changes in your brain chem if taken for several months. Plus, there are so many interactions with MAIOs and SSRIs your very limited to what you can and can not take (i.e. other medications, drugs, mushrooms!?!). My advice to you, is to try some of the homeopathic medicines. I hear salvia is used to treat depression. I find that taking ridiculous amounts of mushrooms helps me sort out my life and gets rid of any anxiety/depression I may have. You also might want to look into 5-htp. It is supposed to stabilize, as well as elevate, your mood. Just my two cents...

Yeah I wouldn't take any of them either. I just got put on Wellbutrin and I think I'm going to stop it already. The whole concept doesn't make sense. Drugs don't take 28-30 days to "kick in" so what exactly is taking that much time? Long term cognitive changes caused by pills? I think it's shady. A good therapist can do more than any drug can.

-Cipralex http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escitalopram
-Celexa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citalopram
-Effexor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venlafaxine
-Palix CR
I can't find

It looks that Cipralex and Celexa are weaker drugs and they are similar. Look into these.

Effexor is probably the last thing you should try its a powerful drug with a whole range of side effects.

I have done well with both St. John's Wort (helped elevate my mood enough to get myself out of my severe depression), and 5-HTP (which, after slowly getting myself up to three 50 mg doses a day, was amazing).

On the 5-HTP, at first, even the smallest bit was too much for me, but after slowly building up, I'd never been so open and uninhibited in my life. I peaked up at around the 5th week, then weaned myself off around week 6 and 7, and never have done another shot at it. I have a bottle waiting on me when I'm ready though. And yes, this took a while to "kick in" as well. I don't understand why, but give anything 6 weeks, the same with St. John's Wort.

The 5-HTP is a precursor to Serotonin. The body/brain converts it to serotonin. Please research before you consider taking anything.

Thanks a lot, guys. It's scary as hell seeing her go through her anxiety attacks, so I just want her to make the right decision.

That sounds scary :frown:

If anyone ever panics in my group it's me so I know what it's like on her end.

I have found that humming the theme to "Pink Panther" always relieves anxiety.

it gives you a nice strolling rhythm as well, which helps if you gotta james bond the place up.

I have some anxiety, but its been pretty much gone for a month now. I don't drink as much and I got my hands on some xanax and colonopin. If I take xanax on Monday, ill still be chill Tuesday and Wednesday....until I drink again.

alcohol heightens anxiety

i have tried 5htp L-Tryptophan 160mg it was realy anxiety relieving after 30mins. next day was realy fine i was more avare of the surrounding world and in good mood, but the 3rd day i had severe depresion which was slowly going away.

2nd time i tried only 80mg, but it had the same 50% efect on me. could be its because of anti psych drugs i take daily.

anyway i can and do eat cheese instead

Would you say that you were quite shy before taking this supplement? Also, what do you mean at first it was too much?

I found your post interesting as I'm trying to find a way to reduce my social anxiety so I can actually talk/be myself for once in my life

Ok, I went out and bought 5-HTP today. Placebo or not, I definitely noticed a difference just under an hour of taking it. I still feel it kinda. It for me, produced some type of high I guess you could say. I would describe it as a hazy/cloudy feeling in my head. Basically I was TONS more outgoing/talkative than I normally am. I felt great tonight and I believe this stuff actually works. But yeah, I only took one and it was just tonight. I'm going to continue taking 1 per day (in the morning probably) to see how it goes and I'll report back.

Also, IMO they were pretty cheap. 60 capsules for $30 CDN plus tax.
