For you who saw BBCs documentary on Scientology here is their take:

A pretty intersting one

Watching it as I type, its well worth a watch... amazingly just like all other news organizations that claim to be objective (ap) i wouldn't think that the BBC of all newtworks would succumb to this. Thanks for posting.

I'm wondering if this is just an isolated incident thought, its a bad reflection on the reporter but i've always been fond of their guidelines.

Edit:
After watching the video and all the collusion involved... it more or less has affirmed even more of my beliefs regarding the media... especially towards the effect of their objectivity. Its well worth a watch.

scientologies response:

http://www.freedommag.org/bbc/video_flash.html

obviously the bbc reporter was looking for a certain angle, and he was just as bad as any fox investigator - however the scientology guy creeped me out, especially how he ambushed the interview with charges from decades ago.

If Scientology wants to be respected as a religion, they need funny hats. For example:

Orthodox Jew

Sikh

The Pope

I think you get my drift.

wow they really fucked up at the end of that

they'd made a fairly objective seeming piece up to right at the end when the narrators voice goes incredibly sinister, and pointedly condemns the bbc and panorama in its entirety.

maybe they have a point. but when watching things like this you have to notice the bits where the music backs them up, the classic 'evil man' BOM BOM BOM and so on.

the viewer is the only objective one, and they have to keep their wits about them. i call it exercise.

that said, sweeney appears to be a complete cowboy and borderline nutter. he certainly wasn't afraid of being obnoxious either...

they should have given the documentary to me. id have enjoyed doing a scientology bit and could have twisted it much more subtly. that and bring up the south park episode on them at more or less every opportunity. it was just so funny.

im not afraid of you! sue me!

i wonder if scientology is the 'real thing'... maybe it should get more respect, all religions must have started life as novelty, in some degree or another.

ah man this really makes me sick

just reading the text intro to that i had to stop after five lines

first off an unsubstantiated claim that sweeney is the panorama bosses 'favourite reporter', assertion hidden in narrative style text.

next i see (on the producer of the episode) that she has previously 'done his (sweeneys) bidding'. done his bidding. he is not evil lord voldemort, for fuck's sake!

its all a fucking game and it does my head in

That website and the documentary was put together by the Church of Scientology. What did you expect from them, welcoming BBC exposing them?

Here is the link to the BBC Panorama documentary for those who haven't seen it:

It's so hilarious when I see people jump through flaming hoops in Sweeney's defense. If it had been a Scientologist acting like that, would the CoS ever hear the end of it?

All a well known Scientologist had to do was express *his views* on the practice of psychiatry and a few uninformed people practically started a witch hunt.

Double standards are fascinating to behold. Especially when those engaging in the double standard realize it but still insist it's not.

Maybe I'm seeing a different video than you are seeing, but the 2 behaviors seem quite different to me.

And you know, if some reporter and a follower of some religion want to play mind games with each other (that's really all this boils down to), then have at it.

Ron Hubbard actually favored criticism for a few reasons, one of which being that it was an indicator of how much progress Scientology was making in society.

But you can hear him say it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwIbOR96Yuk
