Pumice
    #6961669 - 05/24/07 01:38 PM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Hi,

where I live it is very easy to find Pumice

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumice

I went today to the Garden Center looking for some gypsum or lime and they didn´t know what I was talking about ..they only had water adjustment ph. I asked then for some perlite but they didn´t had it either but they offered me some pumice.

Where I live it is plenty of lava rocks and this kind of stuff.

Could I use Pumice instead of Perlite ?? I think yes, but is it better ?? because I can get perlite in another shop and I just want to get the best stuff.

Thanks for the answers.

It seems like you would be able to b/c the craters and valleys on pumice would give it a whole lot of surface area. Perlite would be better but it seems like theres no reason pumice wouldnt work as long as you dont drown it. (follow the same rules as using perlite). Id be sure after using it to constantly monitor how damp it is.

he way I have always understood it, perlite is a volcanic glass that is artificially expanded by the use of heat, into a porous material.

Pumice is a natural occuring substance with the same structure, so it should do the job as well.

People normally choose perlite because it is more widely available than other susbstitutes and generally cheaper also

i use to use pumice rather than perlite. pumice is much easier to deal with and is nearly the same in price and performance.
