Problems with cakes, maybe solved...
    #6954984 - 05/23/07 01:45 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

So I lost a cake today, due to contams. It was kind of weird. See, first, for some reason, this cake sprouted upside down, out of exposed, unrolled mycelium. So I flipped it. 2 days later (during which it didn't get fanned, but still got diffused sunlight) that cake sprouts 2 big ol mushrooms. Not with split veils, but the biggest so far, to be sure. So I check it out, and goddamnit if it isn't littered with aborts, with a patch of like.. velvet... almost blue green fuzz.. sorry, no pic, I just got it out of the fc and the house quickly. And since then, I've noticed that a lot of the little nubs I got, 1/2 inch or less, have basically stalled, or are growing very slowly, and some of the smallest have white heads. In addition, there's now an ever thicker layer of fuzzy white myc growing on the cakes. It gets 12/12 light, 5 fannings a day, soaked perlite and a tote box with 100+ holes. Amazonian strain, for color reference.

I gather the white fuzz was supposed to show up before the baby mushrooms? Is this a problem, or do I just wait? Should I start spraying a little once in a while with some water/h2o2?

Only want to use h2o2 if you have cobweb (dactylium)

I can't really get a good picture of what you mean, though.

Pins were growing from the bottom of the cake, so you flipped it, and thought there was mold on the other side?

Since there's fruits forming, keep it and see how it goes..

Pins were growing from the bottom, from an unrolled patch of mycelium, the dome of the jar, and so I flipped it. The cakes then got left for 2 days in the FC with no fanning. The cake prouts 2 3" mushrooms, and a dozen or so 1/4" aborts, and it has a patch of greenish blue fuzz nestled between the shrooms and aborts. I threw out that cake. Pins formed a bit ago, (a week or so) some of them with white heads (most of them are red), on all the cakes, but they haven't grown since then, and instead, the rolled cakes have grown a layer of white fuzz outside of and beyond the rolled layer of vermiculite. Still no big growth.

why did you throw out the cake? why did you flip the cake?(reason that there are mushies growing at the base is that they will grow where the highest humidity is no need to flip and it prolly hindered some results)

Ahh, I won't flip them in the future. I threw it out because it had green fuzz on it, and I assumed it was contaminated..

ahhh yes green is bad but blue is kinda ok with cakes just means the humidity is low and you need to definitely up it so they wont bruise

And what about the white fuzzy mycelium growth well after pinning? Is that normal?

Well, sweet ass. So, I should maybe just mist with steralized water a few times a day? Maybe my perlite didn't soak long enough. I soaked it about 6 hours and drained the standing water. There's condensation on the wall of the terrarium by the perlite, but not above it.

lol well condinsation doesnt mean jack i have had humidity at 60% and had humidity on the wall of my fc.you dont have to sterilize the water just use normal tap water unless it's waaayyy gross or something but it should be fine.if you have 3-4 inches of perlite in there, there shouldnt be a need to mist i would get a hyrgometer and see what the humidty exactly is, oh and how much perlite is in ther fc?

Like..... 5-6 inches... and since I set it up, I've poured more water into the perlite... I suspect I undersoaked it, I only soaked it for about 6 hours..

the way you prepare perlite is you wash really good and drain it really really well and put in the fc there isnt supposed to be any standing water at all

Humidity was definately the problem... Been misting regularly for the last 3 days or so, and BLAM! Things is sportoutin'. A cake that had like, 2 pins and some white fuzz day before yesterday now has like 7 1 1/2" to 2" fruitbodies, and the caps look like they'll be opening any time now, yay spore prints! The three underperforming cakes, I just harvested all the dozens of aborts and the handful of stalled fruitbodies and I'm resoaking and rolling them, they'll be going back in in a few hours...

Thanks again for everything, more pics fourthcoming, and I'll work out my focus on the camera.
