Poo w/ or w/o casing layer? And general poo question.
    #6952285 - 05/22/07 02:43 PM (16 years, 9 months ago)

A friend and I have just inoculated our WBS with some Mexicube spores. We will be spawning the WBS jars to poo in small trays. I keep reading on The Shroomery that after the poo is completely colonized, you add a casing layer on top.

My friend says we will not be adding the casing layer at all, but just moving the colonized poo to a FC.

Is this going to be ok? What are the advantages and disadvantages of not using a casing layer?

He's been growing for a couple years now, and this is my first grow.

The poo question is...we have some poo from Tennstud, but it's been around for a few weeks. Is it going to be ok to use or should we attain more poo?

Thanks.

I always use a casing layer to try and maximize pinning. I have never fruited without one. I have tried once with the PF Tek but it failed miserably.

i had a horrible time recently with mexicube monotubs and no casing layer, it was a waste of 23 days, i would never do it again, i'll always case forever. I vote use a casing layer, if not, face cobweb, overly moist conditions, not being able to see whats going on really, etc.
it's just smart to use a casing layer, unless you're using invitro bags.

you don't need to have a casing layer with horse poo...

but if you use one you will have a better micro climate for the shrooms.

that and you might have a more even flush though out your container.

non cased bulk horse poo tends to throw off uneven flushes with the possiblities of getting fewer... but larger fruits.

if your friend is insistant on not using a casing layer...

suggest using a peice of wax paper(with holes poked through the wax paper) over the top of the colonized horse poo...

til you have pins coming up through.

this will possibly give you a more even flush.

the Tenn Stud poo should still be fine...

I used some that sat for 6 months before using one time...

and it turned out great!~

Cobweb is from stagnant air, not anything to do with the casing layer.

Overly moist conditions? Your fruiting chamber should be as near 100% no matter what you're doing. Mist less, or turn your humidifier down if that's a problem.

And you can see MORE of what's going on without a casing layer, plus have faster pinning and not have to maintain as much.

No casing layer works fine with certain species if you want, and can provide the appropriate environment to support it. You may(keyword with all things mycology) have better results in terms of larger pinsets and heavier fruits (from the extra water), but you can sure grow some monsters without one(I think my largest I remember minus a casing is 150+ wet grams), and have very good success regardless.

I do both, just depends on how I'm feeling or if I want to take the extra bother with casing, incubating, providing optimal care, etc. vs. just throwing a tray in a 100% RH fruiting chamber, and providing air exchange.

i tend to get 300-600 per tub, wet, with a casing layer, my mexicube tubs i lost, yeah they had stagnant air, too much polyfil twisted to tight, etc. Near 100% is great, i agree, but standing pools of water are not good. No casing layer has only proven problematic, very uneven pinsets, and fushes that are no where near their full potential.

Great responses and good information here.

It's good to hear that there can be good success without the casing layer (if done correctly).  I'll certainly post when results have been had withour attempt.

Thanks again all of you : )

I love The Shroomery
