 Web Designer Resources

I live in NYC and I'm interested in hiring someone to make a kick-ass website for me. I need someone with very good skills so I can talk to him/her about exactly what I want and have him/her make it a reality for me. So, where should I begin looking for web designers? Maybe there's another forum filled with web designers I might have better luck on?

Just make sure that they are familiar with the standards at WWW Consortium for HTML and CSS. They need not know the standards like the back of their hands, but they should at least know what and where they are. The HTML and CSS MUST be valid (at least for the initial design)- if they cannot write valid HTML and CSS, they are not really going to be very much use to you.
Whoever writes your server-side code should be able to prove their familiarity with the scripting language they will be using, and if you plan to have dynamic content, they should be familiar with at least the basics of SQL and have the ability to manage and manipulate at least one SQL server and database(s). Ideally, this programmer will seperate your presentation code from your business logic code as much as possible. These are the minimums you should look for if you want something professional.

I'd recommend elance.com or rentacoder.com. Look for plenty of good references, and make sure they've successfully completed some projects which are similar to your own. There are lots of skilled Indians and Russians on those sites who can give you a great deal (lots of untalented hacks too of course). If you want someone in your same time zone you can find them too, but you'll pay more. Or if you want the best designer on the web, I'll be glad to build a site to your exact specs for $50/hour.

That would be hilarious, if however silly. For the purposes of helping out JunkFood I will elaborate  . No matter how much someone cares or doesn't care about standards, if you find an example of their work and they can prove it is their work (or at least that they have some source level access anyway) you should go with your thoughts and feelings?

Negative. I'm fairly new here. The only reason I have a bad rating right now is because of some douschebag. I asked about an opinion about a DMT extraction and he said I should have searched more. I don't really care, it is what it is. If this guy wants my help, i'll help out, if not, I don't give a shit. My rating has nothing to do with my skills.
