    #6938447 - 05/19/07 11:39 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

Hello All,

I have never heard of crushed oyster shell.... till this site. I was just wondering where you buy it from???? I have seen you can buy it on the net....but, I really don't like buying anything over the net. Is there a store you can get it from? Any help with this is really appreciated. Thanks Tons.

You want oyster shell FLOUR.
Because the particle size is about like flour.

Most crushed oyster shell is chicken grit sized, or larger.
Which, doesn't work as a SHORT TERM buffer.

Best bet for a calcium carbonate buffer LOCALLY.
Is usually food grade calcium carbonate.
From a home brew beer supply store.

Check your local phone book.
Or, google for a home brew beer supply store.
Close you you.

Great!!!! So when I go to the wine store I would ask for a food grade calcium carbonate not Oyster shell flour?

Yes, that is correct.
It runs about $2 a pound.
5 lbs will last you a long time.

If they ask you, "what for?".
Tell them it is to buffer some potting soil,
for exotic house plants.

Awesome! Thank you again
Do people actually use it for exotic plants?
I was just wondering cause a friend of mine is starting to grow pot and well... they aren't doing great. I wonder if it would help.

You need to get pH strips, to TEST pH with.

Or, if you have the buck$.
Get a Kelway HB-2
Ph/moisture meter.

Peat pH

About perfect pH

I got a Kelway HB-2

I dont think its a must have for an amateur mycologist

I use this mix (dont know who started it, maybe agar?!?)
15 1/2 Cups of vermiculite
12 Cups of sphagnum peat moss
3 1/2 Cups of coco coir
2 Tablespoons of hydrated lime
3 1/2 Cups of oyster shell lime

comes to about 6.8- 7.0 ph level
RR says to get PH level up to 8.0 but I have not experimented with that

oyster shell flour
http://kkorchid.com/1medium_potting.asp

second to last item (suggested by hyphae)
