WBS grey myc
    #6937995 - 05/19/07 08:40 AM (16 years, 10 months ago)

My friend had some jars of wbs that were brilliantly white in the top 1/3 (agar wedge innoc) so he shoke it and now the bottom is colonizing but the myc looks really gray. It can't be brusing because the myc recolonizing the top is still white. I'm thinking it might just be sunflower seeds that are giving it a grayish look or maybe some sediments that went to the bottom. Should he toss the jars or will the myc get more thick and white after. He also heard that wbs gives weak flushes (after he did 6 jars of it) so he wants to no if a wet verm layer on the bottom of the casing will efficiently keep the seeds hydrated or if he should spawn to some coir to help hold in moisture.

Leave it alone and look at it in a few days, its probably just not looking white yet after the shake,O and forget the verm and spawn to coir, you will be glad that you did

K thx coir it is. Has anyone used draining grain bags made for the beer making process for their grains. My friend is testing it out right now for bird seed. Does anyone think he can pasturize coir in the special bag too or will it make too much of a mess? (the bag was lent to him)

Unless you count hydrating it in hot water.Coir doesn't even need to be pasteurized.Just put the bricks in a bucket and dump really hot water on it,put the lid on it and the next day its ready to add your spawn

Yea,I mean it couldn't hurt but I hardly think it even gets close to pasteurization,Sometimes I didn't even heat the water but just used it as hot as it got from the faucet

Not necessarily true. WBS is a very good substrate, but it's hard to keep the water content at an optimum level. I've gotten some very, very good flushes from small trays, but haven't experimented with deep substrates yet.

I agree that spawning to coir will be a good investment of your time, though.

Well the top is thick fluffy and white while the bottom is thick fluffy and grayish blue. It's weird the contam would be on the bottom half of the jar and this is a real disappointment because my friend thought he had finally gotten it right this time. I'll post a pic in the contam forum before he chucks it but it seems unlike anything i've seen in pics on this site.
