pasteurizing straw
    #6902731 - 05/11/07 04:02 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

From everything I've read I've come to the understanding that most people use hydrated lime and bleach when pasteurizing straw, but I just talked to a guy that grows bulk oysters who doesn't use anything. He doesn't like to use it because he wants his product to be completely organic and he said that it slows down the colonization time of the mycelium. Has anyone here pasteurized without the chemicals? If so how long did you heat it and did you have any problems with contamination?

never used chemicals, just heated straw in a pillow case in a big pot on the stove for 2 hours at 160-170, drained over the sink. had a few contams from time to time, sure, but i've been pretty happy with this low-tek

I've never used bleach, but I do use lime, which is mineral and not a chemical. The lime is not for pasteurization, but rather to leave the straw with a high pH afterward, so it can colonize without being invaded by trichoderma which loves a low pH. I use it in the pasteurization bath as a matter of convience, rather than to help pasteurize the straw.

Ah... if I don't use lime do you think I'll run into trouble?

You're more likely to. I get pinning on oysters within 9 to 11 days after inoculation, so your friend is dead wrong about it slowing down colonization. The lime just helps to prevent the trichoderma spores from germinating before the mushroom mycelium colonizes the entire substrate. Since it's hard to build a straw project in complete sterility, you should assume that contaminant spores are going to be on it.

I dont use anything but bleach, I pasturize the straw for at least 2 hours at above 160 and below 180.

So far, no problems.

Well... I am pasteurizing the second batch of straw in a 5 gallon pot as I type this. The first batch just got down to about 80-85, so after I write this I am going to go inoculate it. I didn't put in bleach or lime, so I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that they won't get contaminated... I am using two quarts of spawn in milk crates.

The straw he pasteurized has cooled down to 80-85F, so its about ready to inoculated.

Most of the time I just pasturise with plain heat. Bales of straw submerged in 65 degree C water for 2 hours. I get maybe 1 in 100 bags contamed. Oysters are pretty damn resilient, they colonise it so fast if you use a high enough spawn rate.

What container do you submerge the entire bales in?

I've got a nice rectangular stainless steel tank that fits 4 bales. It's pretty good for doing bulk amounts. Takes 8 hours to heat up with a BBQ under it and a 2kw submersion heater.

Where did you get it?

Can you get some pictures of it?

I got it from a seconhand industrial scrap parts dealer. It was pretty sweet cause I picked it up for the price of scrap (by weight). Might get some pics of it and the rest of my setup sometime soon.
